Silent Features of Chenab Bridge

a. It is the world’s highest rail viaduct bridge connecting Kashmir valley with rest of the country by rail route. This
bridge connects Bakkal and Kauri in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir.
b. It is designed to withstand 40 kg of TNT blast and Earthquake of magnitude eight on Richter Scale.
c. This bridge was designed as a large span single arch steel with approach viaducts on either sides. Arch is two-
ribbed and is fabricated from large steel truss.
d. The chords of trusses are steel boxes which are stiffened internally and filled with concrete to support in controlling
wind-induced forces on the bridge.
e. No of bearing has been minimize, mostly on the approach viaduct so as to reduce maintenance and inspection
efforts and improve the riding quality. The viaduct piers are constructed of concrete material while the piers near the
arch are of steel.
DESIGN CONSIDERATION TAKEN IN CONSIDERATION FOR CHENAB BRIDGE
1. Limit state of philosophy of design as per BS codes.
2. Computation of wind load effects as per wind tunnel test.
3. Site specific seismic spectra by IIT Rookee.
4. Euro code 8 provisions for ductility for very tall and hollow rectangular Rcc piers.
5. Provisions for long welded bridges (LWR) and force calculations as per UIC-774-3R guidelines.
6. Blast resistant design.
7. Design check for fatigue as per BS codes.
8. Deformation limits as per comfort criteria of UIC-7726-2R and UIC 776-3R guidelines.
