What is

Research?
Module 3: Presented by Group 7

MONDAY, FEB 14 2022.

Research is a process of systematic inquiry that entails collection of
data; documentation of critical information; and analysis and
interpretation of that data/information, in accordance with suitable
methodologies set by specific professional fields and academic
disciplines.

RESEARCH IS CONDUCTED TO:

Evaluate the validity of a hypothesis or an interpretive framework.
To assemble a body of substantive knowledge and findings for
sharing them in appropriate manners.
To help generate questions for further inquiries.
Scientific Method
What is Scientific Method?

The scientific method was first outlined by Sir Francis

Bacon (1561–1626) and allows for logical, rational
problem solving across many scientific fields. The major
precepts of the scientific method are verifiability,
predictability, falsification, and fairness.

The basic steps in the scientific method are:

Observe a natural phenomenon and define a question about it

Make a hypothesis, or potential solution to the question
Test the hypothesis
If the hypothesis is true, find more evidence or find counter-evidence
If the hypothesis is false, create a new hypothesis or try again
Draw conclusions and repeat–the scientific method is never-ending, and no
result is ever considered perfect

Example of the Scientific Method:

To better understand the process of the scientific method, take a look at the following
example:

Observation: My toaster doesn’t work.

Question: Is something wrong with my electrical outlet?
Hypothesis: If something is wrong with the outlet, my coffeemaker also won’t work
when plugged into it.
Experiment: I plug my coffeemaker into the outlet.
Result: My coffeemaker works!
Conclusion: My electrical outlet works, but my toaster still won’t toast my bread.
Refine the hypothesis: My toaster is broken.
From this point, the process would be repeated with a refined hypothesis.

Urban Planning
Urban planning is the practice of designing and regulating the uses of space with an emphasis on the physical shape, economic
functions, and social consequences of the urban environment, as well as the positioning of various activities within it. Due to the fact
that urban planning encompasses engineering, architecture, and social and political considerations, it is classified as a technical
profession, a political endeavor requiring public involvement, and an academic field. Urban planning includes both the development
of new land ("Greenfields sites") and the revival of existing urban areas, including goal formulation, data collecting and analysis,
forecasting, design, strategic thinking, and public involvement.

Landscape Architecture
Landscape architecture is concerned with the planning, design, management, and stewardship of built and natural settings.
Landscape architects use their specialized skills to promote human and environmental health in all communities. They plan and
design parks, campuses, streetscapes, pathways, plazas, and other community-building initiatives.

Anthropology
Anthropology, "the science of mankind," is the study of human beings on a variety of levels, from the biology and evolutionary history
of Homo sapiens to the social and cultural characteristics that set humans apart from other animal species. Due to the breadth of its
subject matter, anthropology has developed into a collection of increasingly specialized areas, particularly since the mid-twentieth
century. Physical anthropology is the field of anthropology that studies humanity's biology and evolution. The article human evolution
discusses it in further depth. Cultural anthropology (or ethnology), social anthropology, linguistic anthropology, and psychological
anthropology are the fields that examine the social and cultural creations of human communities (see below). Since anthropology
developed as a self-contained science in the second half of the nineteenth century, archeology (see below) as a tool for investigating
ancient civilizations has been an intrinsic element of it.
