Plan of Investigation
Topic: Unemployment
Sub-Topic: Effects of Parental Unemployment on Highschool Students.
According to investopedia.com Unemployment is the term which refers to a
situation when a person is actively searching for employment and is unable to find
work. Unemployment is considered to be a key measure of the health of the
economy. There are 4 types of unemployment; Frictional, Cyclical, Institutional
and Structural. See appendix for more info
Many children are unable to go to school because their parents are unemployed.
New studies have begun to focus on the long-term effects on children whose
parents have suffered from extended periods of unemployment. Researchers have
found that this can lead to poor academic performance, behavior issues and effects
that may last for the rest of the child's life.
In this investigation I will be using three artifacts; An article written by Emily
Kaiser in October 2012,

Reflection 1
The first piece of source that was read by the researcher is an article written by Emily Kaiser in
October 2012. The article is titled How does Unemployment affect Children? “Only recently
have we begun to accumulate evidence that these adult job losses can have an impact on child
development,” said Ariel Kalil, director of the center for Human Potential and Public Policy at
the University of Chicago, on The Daily Circuit. From reading that article I have realized that
unemployment can have both negative and positive effects on children. This article has shaped
my mind to make me more aware of how Unemployment is affecting society as a whole and that
a lot of people are suffering, I think the government should try and provide more jobs to help out
the citizens.
The second piece that will be used by the researcher is a song titled Unemployment by twinkle
brothers. The song talks about how bad it is for people who are living without jobs. The people
in the song are crying out saying how times have gotten hard and they can’t do anything about it.
Most of the people these days can’t even find something to eat they will have a little today and
tomorrow it Is all gone, and that is one of the main things that leads to stealing. Most times when
adults start to steal it isn’t for themselves but their family and children so they can live a good
and comfortable life.
The third piece that will be used by the researcher is a picture found on google of a balance scale
one part labeled Unemployment and the other service in the picture you can see less people in
the service sector than in the unemployment section.

Reflection 2
In the first source the which is an article the author used standard English especially when
quoting the person, the article was clear and understandable as the topic was perfectly explained,
the author got straight to the point while still stating minor details on the side.
In the second piece which is the song by twinkle brothers the language used in the song is
Jamaican creole his piece was very clear and explicit. He went in debt and detail to give the
listeners a better understanding about unemployment, and the vibe it was giving off made it
much easier for me to comprehend what it was saying.
The third piece of source used by the researcher is a picture from google. The picture showed
how many people are unemployed and trying to go over to the service sector. In the picture you
see a few people walking along the line to try and reach over the service sector but not many
make it.

Reflection 3
The researcher chose unemployment for her English Language School Based Assessment to
learn more about the unemployment world. Doing this investigation, the researcher has learned a
lot about the negative and positive effects of Unemployment. Before I did this research, I always
thought the process to get a job was simple, so most people who didn’t have a job I thought was
lazy and uninterested in working but I now realize that is not the issue, and it really is a long and
dreadful process especially if you don’t' have the right qualifications.
