Plan of Investigation
Topic: Unemployment
Sub-Topic: How Unemployment affects high school
students?
Unemployment occurs when a person who is actively searching for
employment is unable to find any work.It is often used as a measure of the health
of the economy. Unemployment has been a plague in our society for decades,
people are laid off from their jobs to join the unemployment line. As a student of
English, I hope to improve my vocabulary skills, academic skills and critical
thinking.

Many students are unable to go to school because their parents are unemployed
or out looking for jobs and this mostly affects high school students who have
younger siblings, they have to take care of them and can't do much for themselves.
New studies have begun to focus on the long-term effects on children whose
parents have suffered from extended periods of unemployment most children when
they see that their parents are out of a job it leads to poor academic performance
because they think that just because their parents don’t have money, they won't be
able to have a good education and go far into the world.

In this investigation I will be using three artifacts a song by twinkle brothers a

The first piece of source is information and a picture from google about some of
the effects of unemployment and a paragraph which is short and simple.

I have seen how unemployment affects a lot of young people in Jamaica, I

personally believe that the government should provide more jobs to the
unemployed citizens of Jamaica. A lot of young people who are new to the
workforce struggle to get jobs because most jobs that pay well requires a lot of
work experience and they can't have that if they don’t find Jobs.

Another big factor that contributes to high unemployment rates is machines. In

recent times companies don’t need people for certain jobs because of the
development of technology so instead of hiring people they just buy and install the
machines to do the work.

It's very devastating to see the young youths struggling to get a job. In a
picture I received from google I saw that young citizens of Jamaica are protesting
and holding up posters of them skills that they have. I have heard the people crying
out in a song stating that it is hard to receive or maintain a job. The business
finances are low and the people are not able to maintain any jobs at all because
they are not getting sufficent salary. What I have learnt is that not all businesses
can afford to maintain a good payment.

Parental unemployment has been associated with lower self-esteem and wellbeing
higher school dropout rates, lower academic expectations, less educational success
and poorer health among children.

The second piece is an article from the gleaner titled: Growth and Jobs youth
unemployment still too high advocate which was written by Miss Kemesha Kelly.
She is a lecturer at The University of the West Indies who talks about how low the
rates are. She trys to draw the governments attention to the situation, the article is
clear and very understandable. This article has inspired me to read more about the
issue and educate others further about it.

A lot of people know about Unemployment but they don’t know of the serious
effects and some of the simple things that causes it and discourage students from
trying, a simple comment about a person's life could lead them to think that it
doesn’t matter what you do things will never get better.
