Karnataka Bank conferred with Confederation of
Indian Industry award
 Karnataka Bank has been chosen for the ‘DX
2021’ digital transformation award in
recognition of its innovative best practice ‘KBL
Vikaas’ by the Confederation of Indian
Industry (CII).
 The bank has recently launched ‘KBL NxT’ as
part of the 2nd wave of ‘KBL Vikaas’, with an
objective of taking the digital initiatives to the
next level and eventually emerge as the
digital bank of the future.
IIT Hyderabad to set up Suzuki Innovation Centre at
its campus
 Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad has
partnered with Suzuki Motor Corporation to
start Suzuki Innovation Centre (SIC) at its
campus.
 The institute has signed a 3-year contract with
the automaker.
 SIC will be operated as a platform for open
innovation among industries, academia, and
startups.
 It will also support the exchange of human
resources between India and Japan.
NDMC, PayTM join hands to enhance municipal
services online
 The North Delhi Municipal Corp and PayTM
have joined hands to boost digital mode of
payment for citizens to avail civic services.
 The collaboration will promote hassle-free
digital transactions and enhance digital
penetration among the citizens.
 The South Delhi Municipal Corp has informed
that under the Swachh Survekshan-2022, it
has declared Ghumanhera ward as its first
'Atmanirbhar Ward'.

Scientists identify a new HIV strain in the
Netherlands
 Researchers at Oxford University have
discovered a highly virulent strain of HIV,
present in the Netherlands for decades.
 But, it's not dangerous because of the
effectiveness of modern treatments.
 Researchers reported in the journal
"Science," that patients infected with the "VB
variant" had 3.5 to 5.5 times higher viral levels
in their blood than those infected with
alternative variants.
UP selected as best state tableau of Republic Day
parade 2022
 Results have been declared for best tableaux
and best marching contingents of Republic
Day parade 2022.
 The Indian Navy marching contingent
was adjudged as the best marching
contingent.
 The tableau of UP has been selected as the
best among the 12 States/UTs.
 The second place went to Karnataka, followed
by Meghalaya.
 Maharashtra was voted as the best in the
popular choice category.
SpaceX launches 49 Starlink satellites into orbit
 SpaceX has added another 49 satellites to its
growing Starlink internet megaconstellation.
 A Falcon 9 rocket launched 49 new Starlink
satellites to orbit on 3 February, lifting off from
NASA's Kennedy Space Center.
 This new set of Starlinks, known as Group 4-
7, will join more than 1,800 functional
satellites in the constellation.
 This was the third Starlink launch of 2022.
India becomes third country in world to record 5
lakh deaths
 India crossed the milestone of 5 lakh COVID-
19 deaths on 3 February 2022, becoming the
third country in the world to do so after the US
and Brazil.
 The country took 217 days to reach 5 lakh
deaths from 4 lakh recorded on July 1, 2021,
the longest time taken to record 1 lakh
fatalities.
 The country's death toll had crossed three
lakh-mark on May 23 and two lakh-mark on
April 27, 2021.
West Bengal to launch open-air classroom 'Paray
Shikshalaya'
 West Bengal government will launch an open-
air classroom program Paray Shikshalaya
(Neighbourhood Schools) for primary and pre-
primary students on February 7, 2022.
 The para teachers and primary school
teachers would be part of the project to
provide elementary education to Class 1-5.
 Mid-day meals will also be provided to the
students of the Shikshalaya.
JNU Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar appointed
as UGC Chairman
 JNU Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar has
been appointed as Chairman of the University
Grants Commission (UGC).
 This is the second time he has been given
this charge.
 He earlier served as the Chairman of UGC
from 14 January to 7 February 2017.
 The post of the UGC Chairman fell vacant on
December 7, 2021. after Prof D P Singh, who
had taken charge in 2018, resigned upon
turning 65.
Three-day torch relay begins for Beijing 2022
Winter Olympics
 The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics torch relay
began on 2 Feb 2022.
 The first three runners in the relay were
athlete Luo Zhihuan, astronaut Jing Haipeng,
as well as satellite designer Ye Peijian.
 The Olympic flame arrived in China on 20
October 2021, making Beijing the first city to
welcome the flame for both the Summer

(2008) and Winter (2022) editions of the
Olympic Games.
Bangladesh: 24 eminent persons to get Ekushey
Padak 2022
 The government of Bangladesh has
announced the names of 24 eminent
personalities for the award of the country's
second-highest civilian honor- Ekushey
Padak.
 Mostafa MA Matin and Mirza Tofazzal
Hossain Mukul, both posthumous, have been
nominated in the field of Language
Movement.
 Freedom fighter Principal Md Matiur Rahman
has been nominated under the category of
Liberation War Fighters.
TN receives budgetary allocation of Rs 7,134.56 cr
for railway project
 In the union budget 2022-23, a total of Rs
7,134.56 crore was earmarked for taking up
various railway projects in Tamil Nadu.
 Southern Railway was allocated Rs 7,134.56
crore for FY 2022-23 in addition to Rs
1,064.34 crore which was extra budgetary
resource.
 In Kerala, Rs 9,489 crore has been allocated
for 8 projects covering a length of 439 kms.
India-born poet Nidhi Zak makes it to longlist of
Dylan Thomas Prize
 Dublin-based Indian poet Nidhi Zak/Aria
Eipe's debut poetry collection 'Auguries of a
Minor God' has been longlisted for the 2022
Dylan Thomas Prize worth £20,000.
 It is among the 8 novels, 2 poetry collections,
and 2 short story collections to be longlisted
for it.
 Launched in 2006, the award is given for the
best published literary work in English, written
by an author aged 39 or under.
Rahul Gandhi launches welfare scheme for farm
labourers in C'garh
 Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on 3 Feb'22
launched a financial assistance scheme of the
 Chhattisgarh government for landless
labourers of rural areas.
 The scheme is called
'Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Bhumiheen
Krishi Mazdoor Nyay Yojana'.
 'Rajiv Yuva Mitan Club' scheme' was also
launched.
 He also laid the foundation stone of a
memorial to be built at the 4th battalion
of Chhattisgarh Armed Force.
International Day of Human Fraternity: 4 February
 On December 21, 2020, the United Nations
General Assembly proclaimed February 4th
as this day, through a resolution, co-
sponsored by UAE and Egypt.
 The first event was held on February 4th,
2021.
 The day commemorates the historic signing of
the Document on Human Fraternity by His
Holiness Pope Francis and His Eminence
Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ahmed Al-Tayeb in
Abu Dhabi, UAE.
World Cancer Day: 4 February
 The Union of International Cancer Control has
declared World Cancer Day as a global
uniting initiative.
 It was founded on 4 Feb 2000, during the
World Cancer Conference in Paris.
 On that same day, Koichiro Matsuura, then-
General Director of UNESCO, and former
French President Jacques Chirac inked the
Charter of Paris Against Cancer.
 Close the Care Gap is the theme for 2022-
2024.
Ranji Trophy first phase to be held from February
10, 2022

 The first phase of the Ranji Trophy will take
place from February 10-March 15, 2022.

Sanctuaries in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh declared
Ramsar sites
 The Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary near Jamnagar
in Gujarat and Bakhira Wildlife Sanctuary in
Uttar Pradesh have been listed as Wetlands
of International Importance by the Ramsar
Convention.
 Ramsar Convention is an international treaty
for the conservation and sustainable use of
wetlands.
 With this, the total number of Ramsar sites in
India has gone up to 49.
