Module 5
IP ADDRESSING

Carry out communication check between terminals in accordance with operating

systems network configuration guides.

Let me remind you some simple rules to enjoy the aim of this learning tool successfully.

1.Read and follow carefully all the contents and directions in each page of this module.
2.On your notebook, take note of the concepts about the lessons. Writing enhances
learning, it is a good practice to develop and keep in mind.
3. Perform all the provided activities in the module.
4. Let your facilitator/guardian assess your answers.
5. Analyze conceptually the posttest and apply what you have learned.
6. Have fun in learning!

Once done going through with this module, you are expected to:

 Define IP Addressing
 Identify the types of IP Addressing
 Appreciate the importance of IP Addressing

IP ADDRESSING
An IP address is a number that is used to identify a device on the network. Each device on a
network must have a unique IP address to communicate with other network devices.

Network devices are those that move data across the network, including hubs, switches, and
routers. On a LAN, each host (device that sends or receives information on the network) and
network device must have an IP address within the same network to be able to communicate
with each other.
What is an IP Address?
An Internet Protocol address (IP address) in layman’s term is basically the address given to your
computer when it’s connected to a network. Technically speaking, an IP address is a 32-bit
number that signifies the address of both the sender and receiver of packets on a network

4
The Two Main Types Of IP Address

1. Static IP Address
-As the name speaks, the static IP addresses and those types of IP address that never change
once they are assigned to a device on a network.
-High security risk
-Used by web, email, and gaming servers who don’t care much about hiding their locations
-Avoids problem when you do troubleshoot which requires figuring out the IP address of each of
Them
-It is also a means to prevent address conflicts between the devices. You can also manage
them with ease if you have assigned their own addresses.

2. Dynamic IP Address
- Changes each time the device logs into a network.
-This kind of IP address is very tough to trace and are thus used by companies and business
firms.
-IP addresses are assigned using DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol).
-If more than a few computers comprise the LAN, manually configuring IP addresses for every
host on the network can be time-consuming and prone to errors. In this case, using a Dynamic
Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server would automatically assign IP addresses and
greatly simplify the addressing process.

5
Write S if the description is for Static IP Address, write D if it is for Dynamic IP Address.
________1. Assigning is easier
________2. Assigning is difficult
________3. A permanent numeric address
________4. Does not change once it is assigned to a device
________5. Assigned manually by a network administrator
________6. Changes each time the device connects to a network
________7. More secure
________8. Suitable for a large network that requires internet access to all devices
________9. Assigned by a DHCP server network automatically
______10. A temporary IP Address that is assigned to a device or a node when is connected to a
network

IP address is a number that is used to identify a device on the network. Each device on network
must have a unique IP address to communicate with other network devices.
Two Main Types Of IP Address:
1. Static IP Address- IP address that never change once they are assigned to a device on a
network.
2. Dynamic IP Address- changes each time the device logs into a network

2. How can you avoid problems in troubleshooting a device?

3. What do you think is the reason why on a LAN, each host and network device must have an
IP address?

True or False. Write True if the statement is correct, write False if the statement is wrong. Write
answers only in your answer sheets.
_______1. A dynamic IP address changes each time the device logs into a network.

______ 2. Each device on a network must have a unique IP address to communicate with
other
network devices.
_______3. IP address is considered as the address given to a computer when it’s connected to
a network.
_______4. A static IP addresses are those IP addresses which change once assigned to a
device
on a network.
_______5. An IP address is a number that is used to identify a device on the network.
