INTRODUCTION:
The urban design report consists of several exercises carried out on study
trip , neighborhood place making activity and thiruvottriyur urban design
exercise.
Urban design is the process of designing and shaping the physical features
of cities, towns and villages and planning for the provision of municipal
services to residents and visitors. In contrast to architecture, which focuses
on the design of individual buildings, urban design deals with the larger
scale of groups of buildings, streets and public spaces, whole
neighbourhoods and districts, and entire cities, with the goal of making
urban areas functional, attractive, and sustainable.

Urban design is an inter-disciplinary field that utilizes elements of many

built environment professions, including landscape architecture, urban
planning, architecture, civil engineering and municipal engineering. It is
common for professionals in all these disciplines to practice urban design.

SABARMATI RIVERFRONT PLAN

The key feature of this project is a two-level, continuous promenade at the

water’s edge along each bank of the river. The lower-level promenade is
built just above the water level to serve pedestrians and cyclists, and to
provide access to the water. The upper level promenade shall host a
variety of public features at the city level. Together these provide
Ahmedabad with an uninterrupted, pedestrian walkway, nearly 11.5km in
length, in the heart of the city.
At the Exhibition Centre , the riverfront will host trade-fair facilities to serve
the business community.
Integrated outdoor vending areas, situated all along the length of the
project, will accommodate street vendors so they too benefit from the
project.
