Introduction
Network design plays a very important role in any hospital’s management. Strong and thoughtful
network design helps the workers and authorized persons to conduct all the activities that are done in a hospital.
Internet speed is a major component of ensuring that healthcare providers and other professionals achieve
timely access to pertinent information.
We have used Cisco Packet Tracer for designing the network topology. The main aim of this paper is
to design a hospital network which meets the requirements of a hospital network like electronic health records,
billing department records, keeping track of the research in progress, etc. This thesis will try to create a very
efficient hospital network design. By analyzing current network bandwidth performance and financial data of a
health care organization, as it relates to network connection cost, organizations can improve network
performance and save money in the process. The aim is to provide secured LAN and WLAN network. The
network is designed by keeping in mind of upcoming technology in medical field. This will increase the
quality of hospital service along with patient safety and clinical effectiveness. Additionally, this thesis will
propose possible solutions to help many medium size health care organizations’ networks.
Objectives:
• To construct a dependable Hospital network design.
• To allow patients and visitors to connect to the hospital so that hospital authority can connect with
them.

Network requirements:
In Health care Network topology, we have desktop Computer, laptops, smart phone. There is a data
flow between the devices within the system. We have divided our network into segments like for Hospital
wards, clinical area etc. We have also used SSH for security. Our network requirements include network
devices like routers, switches, server.
2
Overview of the Company
The network is designed considering an infrastructure of a hospital. We have tried to select most
appropriate segments from a hospital system that should be considered while designing the hospital network
design. Here IT department is the central part of the network which keeps eye on the activity that is being done
in the hospital. Following are the segments given which are kept hospital network design.

Physical Connection:
Following is the connection that we are going to implement physically in the hospital. Here, as you can see, all
the elements of the network are connected to the main wiring closet (Server).
Logical Connection:
Below is the logical connection of all the different segments that are there in the hospital network one by one.
IT Department:

Clinical Area:
Entrance Reception:
General Ward:
Private Ward:
5
Lobby Area:
After observing all these segments distinctly, let’s see how the network is altogether designed. Here, mainly
there are two parts. One for hospitality work and other for facilitating the patients and visitors.

Proof of Concept
All the communications between any two segments are happening successfully through the respective
routers. For example, we have shown one transmission below.

Request for Proposal
This Hospital Network is designed considering a single hospital in a metropolitan city like
Mumbai. That Hospital has various segments which can communicate with other using routers and
switches. Each segment has different number of personal computers as per the segment’s need.
Segments contain some important and required rooms that you can find in any hospital, like IT
department, reception area, private and general ward, etc. There are two servers also present in the
system for managing web development activities and transferring important data across the hospital. It
also provides a wireless network access in parking and lobby.
As we know, hospital is ever growing industry in the world. Any invention in the healthcare
industry can result into saving lives of many people. Not only invention but improvement in the
predesigned structure of hospital can also be considered as a blessing. So, it is good that we keep on
adding good and beneficial concepts in the hospital network. This project also provides some vital
inputs in developing the network design of hospital. Features of this project are given below with their
description.
DHCP: The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a network management protocol used on
UDP/IP networks whereby a DHCP server dynamically assigns an IP address and other network
configuration parameters to each device on a network so they can communicate with other IP networks.
DNS: The Domain Name System is a hierarchical and decentralized naming system for computers, services,
or other resources connected to the Internet or a private network.
HTTPS: Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure is an extension of the Hypertext Transfer Protocol. It is used
for secure communication over a computer network and is widely used on the Internet.
SMTP: The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is a communication protocol for electronic mail transmission.
FTP: The File Transfer Protocol is a standard network protocol used for the transfer of computer files
between a client and server on a computer network.
WIFI: Wi-Fi is the name of a wireless networking technology that uses radio waves to provide wireless
high-speed Internet and network connections.
