Basic Parts of a Reciprocating Engine

Piston

- It is the moving part of the engine. Circular in shape, the engine’s power is
transferred through it and the crankshaft. Within the combustion chamber, the
piston operates as a moving wall. The mixture of gasoline and air is drawn in as
the piston goes down the cylinder. Compressing the charge, it ignites, and the
piston is forced downward by the expanding gases as it advances higher.

Connecting Rod

- Because the piston has a reciprocating motion, the connecting rod converts this
motion into rotary motion.

Valves (Inlet and Outlet) or Port (Inlet and Outlet)

- When the engine is in a suction mode, the inlet valve allows charges to enter the
cylinder, and the outlet valve allows the burned gas to exit the cylinder.

Spark Plug or Fuel Injector

- Spark plugs in aircraft are in charge of transferring power from the ignition
system to the combustion chamber. The internal-combustion engine of the
aircraft is then used to ignite the fuel mixture.

Piston Ring

- Piston rings prevent the gas pressure from leaking from the combustion
chamber. Also, it promotes a smooth up and down movement of the piston.

Cooling jackets

- Cooling jackets diffuse the heat and prevent overheating. This allows the engine
to work efficiently because its temperature is at standard.
