EXPERIMENT FOR TITRATION

Please answer the following and check on the note given at the
end of the assignment for additional information.
A. Apparatus and Materials
Apparatus: 10ml syringe, container, measuring cup
Materials: vinegar, washing powder, turmeric powder, distilled water

B. Procedure
Step 1 is given for you as an example. Continue with step 2 onwards.
1. Fill up the syringe with vinegar and note the initial volume mark on the
syringe.
2. Mix PH indicator with washing powder solution
3. Slowly add vinegar into the washing powder solution until it changes
color
4. Take down the final volume of vinegar in syringe
5. Repeat steps 1 to 4 two more times
6. Tabulate the data

C. Step by Step picture with description
Insert the image and write the simplified captions below each image

Materials: vinegar, turmeric powder, water, washing powder

Apparatus: plastic containers, syringe, wooden stick

Initial volume of vinegar was recorded at 10ml

Mix washing powder with water to make a washing powder solution. Then add
PH indicator (turmeric powder solution)

Add vinegar into the mixture and stir until the colour changes to bright yellow.
When it is bright yellow, the solution is neutral.

Record the final volume of vinegar (1ml) to calculate the volume of vinegar
used. After that, repeat the experiment 2 more times and tabulate the data.

E. Discussion
Answer the following questions:
1. Why is the experiment repeated done thrice? Explain your answer.
It acts as a precaution method to obtain an accurate reading.
2. Why is a pH indicator is used in this experiment?
To ensure the reaction between the vinegar and washing powder
solution is neutral.
3. What other samples can be used instead of vinegar and washing
powder at home?
Lemon juice and salt solution
4. What type of container is suitable can be used for washing solution
during titration? Give a reason for your answer.
A clear container so that the change of colour of the ph indicator and
be observed clearly.
5. Given that the detergent contains sodium hydroxide and vinegar
contains ethanoic acid. Assuming the concentration of ethanoic acid
is 1 mol/dm3.
a) Write the balanced chemical equation for the reaction
CH3COOH + NaOH  CH3COONa + H2O
b) Determine the concentration of the washing powder solution used

F. NOTE
1) Use half teaspoon of washing powder diluted in 100 ml of water for
alkali sample
2) Acid samples does not need to be diluted
3) Use 25 ml of washing powder solution for titration
