Introduction

Most of earlier research on the subject has been academic and identified the project

management practices used by one or a few firms. This study was conducted in both a

professional and academic way, and its objective is to ascertain the practices used by most

private organizations in general. Studies on project management practices are common and

are mostly oriented to the technical-practical dimension, but little research can be found in

the literature that analyzes the influence of practitioners’ characteristics and group factors on

project management practices. In this paper, the author proposes a theory about how to

identify which project management practices are used by most private organizations in

general, by sector of activity.

The ultimate aim of this study was to get a practical and useful perspective on how

project management practices are used by private organizations globally concerning sectors

of activity, along with the characteristics of their practitioners, leading to a better

understanding of the application of project management practices in a more efficient way.

Main Body

Most studies about project management are oriented to resolving problems concerning

the implementation and control of projects. Few studies analyze which practices are used

more frequently by practitioners, that is, which practices have the greatest impact on the

performance of projects. These studies focus on a particular project problem and tend to use

practice adoption models and theories to solve them. One important conclusion is that

combinations of project management practices exist, that they are selected according to value

orientation and human beliefs, and that they can also be used as toolsets. The paper has

explored this theory in a very detailed manner. The paper explains what a project should be.

A project is a tool that helps in the coordination, organization and control of individual or

team efforts towards a certain purpose (Tereso et al., 2019). Project management is the

activity developed to make this process more effective. Project-oriented work can be found in

all organizations whose goal is to provide goods and services of great complexity, both from

an organizational point of view and based on technical requirements. The trend is to use

projects throughout the project life cycle by dividing them into several phases as has been

reported in this study.

An area where the paper fails to dwell was on the importance of creating a project.

Creating any kind of project is part of a routine for most organizations. Creating a project

management practice that can be used in various sectors of activity and adapted to the most

relevant requirements is, on the other hand, a complex process that needs to be implemented

step by step. This process must include all aspects of project management, both managerial

ones (planning, determining project-specific goals, organizing and leading) and technical

ones (organizing activities, defining their outcome, understanding resource metrics). In

addition to these two, there are also specific issues that may appear in each sector or area of

activity where projects are developed. The paper Because this is an extremely broad issue

with unlimited complexities and different factors that should be taken into account when

planning a new project management practice to follow in an organization of any type and

size.
