3.0 INSTALLATION
1. Unpack the 65550 Multimedia Daughter Card and visually inspect for any damage that may have occurred
during shipping.
2. Read this User’s Guide to become familiar with the board operation.
3. Power down the host system and plug MM65550 Multimedia Daughter Card onto the DK65550-VL (or DK-
65550/554-PCI) board. Please make sure that the cable on J6 of DK65550-VL board is unplugged.
4. Power down host system and plug the DK65550-VL (DK65550/554-PCI) into an available VL (PCI) slot on
motherboard. Note that VL versions of this DK board do not support ISA bus.
5. Connect the speakers to the audio phone jack connector (J6). Connect the VCR or laser disc player
composite video out to RCA jack (J3). Connect the SVIDEO OUT of the VCR or laser disc player to the
SVIDEO connector (J4). For the DK65550-VL or DK65550/554-PCI board installation, please refer to the
DK65550-VL or DK65550/554-PCI User’s Guide.
6. Turn on the system and observe the sign on message. If the sign on message does not appear, turn off the
system and follow the instructions in the troubleshooting section.
7. Load the proper driver and utilities to activate the 65550 Multimedia daughter card. Refer to the Software
User’s Guide for the 65550 Multimedia board for instructions on software installation.
5.0 JUMPERS
The 65550 Multimedia daughter card does not have any jumpers. Users do not need to change anything on the 65550
Multimedia Daughter Card before installing it onto the DK board.
6.0 CONNECTORS
Table 6-1 describes the functions of each connector for the Multimedia Daughter Card.
7.0 FUNCTIONS
The 65550/554 single chip LCD/CRT controller provides a low power, high performance, and minimal component
video subsystem solution. The DK65550-VL and DK65550/554-PCI evaluation boards are video adapter card s
implementing the 65550/554 single chip LCD/CRT controller. The 65550 Multimedia Daughter Card design works
with either the DK-65550-VL or DK65550/554-PCI board by plugging directly onto the DK board to display the
“LIVE” video pictures on the CRT or flat panel.
The 65550 Multimedia Daughter Card has three major video/audio components, manufactured by Philips
Semiconductors:
SAA7110-video decoder
F1236-TV tuner module
TDA9855-stereo audio decoder
To communicate with these components, Philips developed a simple bi-directional two-signal bus called the I 2C-bus.
The I2C-bus interface has two signals, “serial data” and “serial clock”, to communicate with most other Philips’ parts.
The 65550/554 controller uses this I 2C-bus interface to initialize and program these three components. Even though
the 65550/554 controller does not have two designated signals specifically for the I 2C-bus interface, the 65550/554
controller can still communicate with these components by using two of the three General Purpose Input Output
(GPIO) pins on the chip. To properly use the 65550 Multimedia Daughter Card, the user must set two GPIO pins for
the “serial data” and the “serial clock” by removing and adding some resistors on the DK65550 board. Please refer to
the DK65550 board schematics for details.
After properly configuring the hardware, the user can load t he software to initialize the registers and to activate the
multimedia functions of the 65550/554 controller and the 65550 Multimedia Daughter Card .
Figure 8-1, Figure 8-2, and Figure 8-3 on the following page shows the pinout and pin assignments for each
connector.

The 65550 Multimedia Daughter Card design has an option to use either through hole or SMT regulators. For the
digital device like part of the circuitry in the SAA7110, the digital +5V must be separated from the analog +5V. The
65550 Multimedia Daughter Card uses the +5V provided from either the DK65550-VL or DK65550/554-PCI board to
supply the digital +5V power.
13.0 TROUBLESHOOTING
1. Check that the 65550 Multimedia Daughter Card and DK65550/554 board are properly connected.
2. Ensure an antenna is connected to the TV tuner module in U1.
3. Verify a cable connects the CVBS connector (J3) or the SVIDEO connector (J4) to the video appliance.
4. Verify all other parts in the system function properly by testing a known working VGA board with the
system.
5. Make sure the DK65550/554 board works before plugging in the 65550 Multimedia daughter card.
6. If the 65550 Multimedia Daughter Card still does not work with DK65550VL or DK65550/554 board,
contact your CHIPS representative.
