Modification to feed forward control signal

Dear Sirs

In our continuous efforts to minimise the lube oil dosage at nominal load, extra
lubrication during manoeuvring and load change becomes more important, as
accomplished with the LCD (load change dependent) function.

However, some combinations of ship types and sizes in relation to the engine type
and lay-out have revealed that unintended triggering of the LCD function can occur,
due to fuel rack hunting because of the ship’s movement at sea. Such unintended
LCD activation may result in costly over-consumption of cylinder lube oil.

This can be prevented by readjusting the LCD parameters, such as lowering the reset
time (tr default 10 sec.) or increasing the index band (Ir default 10%).

Another way of preventing unintended LCD function triggering, on ships where the
engine governing system has a special index/load mode, is to switch from rpm mode
to index or load mode.

However, in some cases unintended LCD function triggering is difficult to prevent


without jeopardizing the LCD functioning during manoeuvring.

We have therefore changed our standard LCD function from being triggered by actual
index variation, to a physical change of telegraph handle position. This changes the
LCD function so as to be triggered only by intended load changes.

The modification requires some changes of the LCD control system, and possibly also
changes of the telegraph system. The required modification on the actual vessel
depends on the propeller type, and whether the LCD function is incorporated in an
electronic governor or is controlled by a separate system.

For vessels with fixed pitch propeller and electronic governor, the modification is, in
most cases, limited to change of the governor software related to the LCD function.

For vessels with fixed or controllable pitch propeller and a separate LCD control box,
the modification will require changes to the control box and possibly modification of
the telegraph system in order to provide a signal for telegraph handle (or controllable
pitch propeller command handle) position.

Vessels with controllable pitch propeller and LCD function in the electronic governor
require special engineering. These types of vessels are often operated with fixed
engine r/min and, consequently, the electronic governor, in its current configuration, is
not able to estimate load changes from the telegraph handle position. Modification of
the LCD function on these types of vessels may require the installation of a separate
control box.

Regarding the practical implementation of the modified LCD function, we ask you
kindly to contact the actual supplier (electronic governor maker or cylinder lubricator
maker) or MAN B&W Diesel A/S.
