Classification of Service Letters

Action Code: COMMERCIAL / FOR INFO

Dear Sirs

You have probably noticed that Service Letters issued by MAN B&W Diesel A/S during
the past year have been provided with action codes. This classification was started in
cooperation with the CIMAC working group “Users”, with the aim of classifying the
urgency of the information given in the Service Letters which the designers and engine
builders send to owners/users, i.e. shipowners, power plant operators, shipyards, etc.

The original classification has now been changed to include a few modifications
introduced by ourselves, and in future MAN B&W Diesel A/S will classify Service
Letters according to the action codes listed below:

1. Action Code: IMMEDIATELY

Information that requires immediate action as the problem described could lead to
personal injury, explosions and fire.
All such information must reach the technical manager by telefax or e-mail
immediately.

2. Action Code: AT FIRST OPPORTUNITY

Information that describes the risk of a major breakdown and consequent off-
service, i.e. a costly casualty for the operator.

3. Action Code: WHEN CONVENIENT

Information that describes minor difficulties, possible improvements and the
upgrading of components and systems.

Purely commercial information, e.g. the establishment of service stations, etc.
