General Instructions To enhance operational reliability when running your engines, we would like
to recommend the following to ensure that your engine starts reliably.
Cause Under certain circumstances lubricating oil or water may gather in a cylinder’s
combustion chamber when the engine is at a standstill. For example, coolant
leaks on combustion chamber parts, on the charge-air cooler or on the
exhaust gas boiler may enable water to be collected imperceptibly in the
cylinder. Lubricating oil collected in the combustion chamber may be a
consequence of faulty cylinder lubrication operation.
Possible damage Oil or water collected in the cylinder, which exceeds the compression-
chamber volume, could lead to a hydraulic lock when blowing-through the
engine. This in turn could cause severe damage to the piston unit, conrod,
bearings and combustion chamber parts.
In the past, turning the engine was a routine procedure prior to each blow-
through or starting process. This was, in other words, a “good old tradition”.
