Distribution:
Distribution is the methods and process of getting a media product to an audience.
There are three main methods of distribution and the first is retail which is giving
physical copies of the magazines to shops, the second is subscription which is when
the company sends a physical copy to a person that pays a subscription to them and
digital download which is when someone downloads a digital copy of the magazine
from the magazine companies website.

Distribution company for Empire magazine

Empire magazine is distributed by Frontline which was
founded in 1986 is currently the “leading magazine distributor
in the UK”.

Frontline is a market leader having more than “800” different magazine brands
“Representing over 60% of the UK newsstand sales and 75% of the UK Export
market. A few of the brands that they distribute include Empire, Mojo, Closer,
Country walking and Classic cars this is because they are publishing partners with
Bauer media who owns the magazine.

Their “unique service offering could be invaluable to other UK publishers and in 1994
Seymour Distribution emerged as a joint venture agreement between” themselves
and “Hachette Distribution Services.”

Getting the magazine

Retail:
Retail is when physical copies of the magazines get
distributed and sold in shops and supermarkets and
other types of retail like supermarkets, newsagents,
petrol stations and shops like WH Smiths, Asda,
Co-Op, Nisa local and Shell so people can buy them
there. This might be good for
people because they can have
a look at what the magazine features on the contents page and
see if there are any articles that look appealing to them. They
can buy the magazine as well as doing their food shopping and
they are usually cheap only costing £4.99

Subscription:
A subscription is an arrangement to receive every latest issue
of the magazine you want to read by getting it delivered to
your home. You can do this by paying money either weekly,
monthly or yearly to the magazine company. This might be
good for people because it costs less money in the long run
and £4.10 a month for a subscription to Empire magazine.
This would be cheaper than buying the physical copy of their
magazine from the shop. As it gets delivered to the subscriber
personally it would be good because it makes it more convenient for people because
they don’t have to go to the shop and look for it. It also guarantees that they receive
a copy of each issue rather than risking it being unavailable or sold out in shops.
Also with the covid-19 virus people might not want to risk catching it and putting
themselves and their loved ones at risk.

Digital download:
A digital download is an electronic form of the magazine which you can get on your
phone, computer or tablet from the magazine's website such as the empire website
where you can get a digital subscription for £4.10 a month. This would be good for
people because it makes it more convenient for people because they can read the
magazine anywhere that they go such as restaurants or on public transport.It also
won’t take up space in your house and you can’t lose it because it is stored in your
phone's files. It also can’t get water damaged meaning you don't have to replace it
by buying it again. You can get it as a digital subscription but you can also buy
individual digital copies of the magazine. It also allows people to get the magazine
without having to worry about catching covid-19. You also get the magazine on your
phone instantly. Also physical media is decreasing so there might not be as many
copies of the magazines available in stores or online.
