SEMESTER-III

9. Expand ONE of the following into a paragraph. (5m)

 What is a proverb?

Proverb is a brief statement or short sentence often with a moral and usually
containing similes or metaphors drawn from daily life.

1. Time and tide waits for no man

The proverb states that no one can delay the passing of time and as such one should not
leave until a later date a favourable opportunity to do something. Though man has
invented and discovered so many things. But still he is controlled by time. So he should
know the value of time and should not delay things. When circumstances are favourable
to do certain things, he should grab that opportunity and take advantage of it. Otherwise
in his later life he has to suffer. Therefore one should be extremely conscious of time, its
precious nature, and do what can be done today, today itself, without giving in to the
temptation of postponement. If one develops such an attitude, it will be easy to take
advantage of the opportunities that come one’s way.

2. Cut the coat according to your cloth

One should live within one’s means. One should plan one’s expenses according to the
available resources. If balance is struck between the income and expenses, one has to face the
consequences and problems. That expenditure is exceeding beyond their resources, they take
money through loans for interest. In later time, they cannot repay their loans. It leads them to
face unnecessary problems. One should be cautious in spending their income. Proper planning
will help them to maintain balance between their resources and expenditure. This proverb also
reminds us that luxury life will spoil one’s beautiful life.

3. where there is a will, there is a way

The proverb says that if one really wants to do something, one will find a way to succeed.
Determination and dedication is the key to success. If one is determined to do something,
there is no way that person could be stopped from doing the intended thing. Even if several
obstacles come in one’s way, one evolves strategies and methods to overcome the obstacles
and succeed in one’s goal. A person, who is determined to succeed in a particular thing,
will summon all the resources and energy at his or her command and will be all fired-up to
achieve success. Determination or the mental toughness and psychological makeup of a
person to succeed play a crucial role in achieving success.

4 .Empty vessels make much noise

Foolish or witless persons are the most talkative or noisy. Like the empty vessels
which make the most sound when they are empty and hardly make any sound when they are
full, foolish people talk more and act less. Being on the lines of another proverb which states
“Actions speak louder than words”, this proverb asserts that people who are knowledgeable
talk less and demonstrate their worth through actions.

5. Birds of same feather flock together

People of the same sort are found together. Usually we find people of the same social
class living in a particular area. Like birds of same kind that fly together, so also people who
belong to a particular social class prefer to live in a particular area that is inhabited by people
belonging to their class. Caste and community also play an important role in uniting people on
the caste and communal lines. But this is not desirable behavior. This proverb explains that
people with similar tastes and interests make friendship and they will be always together.

6. Honesty is the best policy

One should be honest in one’s dealings. Dishonest and unfair means may succeed in the
short run, but they may not pay off in the long run. Those who practice honesty they will get
peace of mind. One will not be troubled with a guilty conscience and will not suffer the mental
agony if one lives honestly. It is only the brave people who can adopt honesty as a way of life
and they are bound to be admired. Honesty gives a kind of satisfaction which no amount of
money can buy.

7. Strike while the iron is hot

This proverb stresses the importance of opportunity and says that one should do
something immediately rather than wait until a later date when one is less likely to succeed.
The essence of success is timeliness. When an opportunity presents itself, one should grab it
and take advantage of it. If one ignores an opportunity, the circumstances that one faces later
may not be all that favourable as on the earlier occasion when one missed that opportunity.
Therefore, when the circumstances are favourable for a particular action, one should act
proactively and grab it effectively.

8. No pain, no gain

The proverb states that one cannot achieve or earn anything without seriously working for
it. Though this proverb is true to a large extent, it may not go unchallenged in the current
times. In fact, today, those who act as middlemen and hardly take any risks or exert
themselves, both physically and mentally, make much more money than those who work hard
throughout the day. If one has the right contacts, he or she can easily earn huge amounts of
money today. Of course, this is not the right way to say that this proverb is not applicable in
the current times. But this proverb still holds good as those who dedicate their time to certain
ventures, and work day and night for the success of a project, ultimately reap the fruits of their
hard work. All great people became great because of their hard work.

9. Procrastination is the thief of the time

(meaning - delay in activity)

The proverb says that one must not procrastinate or postpone things that should be done
today as one loses forever the precious time during which the intended thing could have been
achieved and delays or loss of time may also cause avoidable harm. Most of us have tendency
to postpone things, not because we are lazy but because we fail to prioritize things. Time
management is the essence of success in life and those who plan and manage their time well
invariably end up as success stories. If a thing needs to be done today, other less important
things should be kept aside. As it is not possible to attend to all things at the same time, one
should draw up a priority list of those that need one’s attention immediately and action should
be initiated to get those things going. Some things are time-bound and if they are postponed,
they may lose their relevance and it may too late even if one decides to act on them at a later
time.

10 A stitch in time saves nine

The proverb says that it is better to deal with a problem early than to wait until it gets
worse. Most of us have a tendency to postpone things, either out of laziness or because of other
things that need our immediate attention. While this tendency may not prove harmful in many
cases, it may prove very costly and injurious in some instances. So, even if one does not find
time to attend to a problem immediately, he should at least make sure that postponement in
such a case does not prove to be a costly mistake. But it would be ideal if one can act when one
detects a problem, as such an act will save a lot of energy, time and money later. What can be
done today should be done today and as far as possible one should avoid putting it off till
tomorrow, as tomorrow may never come, and even if it comes it may be too late.
