Step 1: Ask a question
Come up with a question about slime that can be answered through
an experiment. Brainstorm ideas in the circle map below, then choose
your question to write in the question mark box.

Question
Step 2: Research your topic
Read the article below to get more knowledge about your topic. If
you find information that relates to your question, highlight or
underline it.

What Is Slime Anyway?

You’ve probably played with slime before, and
maybe even made it yourself. But what exactly is slime,
and how do the ingredients work together to create the
slimy substance?
To understand slime, you first need to
understand polymers. A polymer is a large chain of
molecules made up of smaller units that repeat
themselves. The glue we use to make slime is an
polymer. When the liquid starch or borax is added to the
glue, it changes the molecules. They are making a new,
thicker chain, which forms the slime.
If you’ve learned about states of matter, maybe
you’ve wondered: is slime a solid, liquid, or gas? This is a
tricky question, because you can pick it up and hold it like
a solid, but it flows like a liquid and also takes the shape of
its container, like a liquid does. Because it takes the shape
of its container, it is technically classified as a liquid.
Having properties of both a solid and a liquid make it such
a fun and interesting substance to play with!
Step 3: State your hypothesis
A hypothesis is a smart guess for what will happen, or what you will
find out, in your experiment. It should be written like this:
IF ________________________, then ___________________, because
_________________________. In the “if” blank, you will tell what you
are going to do in your experiment. In the “then” blank, you will tell
what will happen when you do that. In the “because” blank, you will
explain why you think that will happen. Here’s an example:
If I use water instead of glue, then the mixture will not become slime,
because water is not a polymer.

Step 6: Report Your Results
After scientists find the results of their experiments, they report the
results, so that others can learn from their findings. Write a scientific
report about your results. Be sure to explain your experiment and
what you learned from it.
