Day 3 ENGINE RELATED TERMS

1.TDC: top dead centre=upper side limit of

piston moves.
2. BDC: bottom dead centre=lower side limit of
piston to move.
3.BORE: the diameter of cylinder.
COMPRESSION RATIO:
The internal combustion engine or external
compression engine is a value that represent the ratio to the
volume of combustion chamber from its largest capacity to
its smallest capacity.
DISPLACEMENT:
The movement of piston moves from BDC to TDC.
STROKE:
The distance between TDC to BDC is called stroke
length the piston trave is from TDC to NDC.
ENGINE AGAIN CLASSIFIED BASED ON NUMBER OF STROKES
 Two Stroke engine
 Four stroke engines
FOUR STROKE ENGINE
Four stroke cycle experiences four piston movement
over two cranks’ revolutions
 Intake stroke or suction stroke
 Compression stroke
 Power stroke
 Exhaust stroke
SUCTION STROKE:
 Air fuel mixture come inside.
 Inlet value open and exhaust value closed.
COMPRESSION STROKE:
 Moves from BDC to TDC inlet value are kept
closed.
POWER STROKE:
 The piston from TDC.
 Due to explosion piston is forced back to BDC.
 Hence is called a power stroke and both
values are still closed.
EXHAUSTS STROKE:

 Piston travel upward pushing the exhaust gas.

 Exhaust value is open.
 Inlet value is closed.
TWO STROKE ENGINE:
 A two-stroke engine has two piston movement
over revolution for each cycle.
 The engine is able do prods power after one
cycle because the exhaust and intake of the gas
occurs simultaneously.
TWO STROKES FOUR STROKES

1.it has one revolution of the 1.it has two revolution of the
crankshaft during one power crankshaft during one power
stroke. stroke.
2.itgenerates high torque. 2.it generates less torque.
3.more wear and tear occur. 3.less wear and tear occur.

4.More smoke and less 4.less smoke and more

efficiency. efficiency.
5.lighter and noisy. 5.heavier and less noisy.
