Philosophy: On its relevance

Philosophy is a Greek word that means "love of wisdom." In other words, philosophy is
the study of the underlying nature of knowledge, reality, and existence, particularly as an
academic discipline. Philosophy can undoubtedly help me live a better life if I apply it to my
daily life. It allows me to develop my ability to examine and assess a situation or an idea, as well
as improve my reasoning and critical abilities, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, proper
judgment, and decision making. It also broadens my perspective and point of view on a subject,
allowing me to think objectively and honestly about it. To be honest, every day of my life is
filled with events that raise philosophical questions. For example, why do we consume the foods
we eat, work the way we work, and visit the places we visit? What are the ideas that underlie our
most fundamental activities? Whenever we participate in critical thinking, whenever we
rationally assess arguments, we are already engaged in philosophy, whether we are voting or
deciding what to eat for dinner.
At what particular point of my life does I see the role of philosophy? I think after I
graduate from senior high school. For a short period of time, I decided not to go to college
without thinking logically about the consequences of my actions. However, after a long talk with
my mom, I came to my senses and decided to apply to a college; knowing that without
education, I cannot develop as an individual and go further in life. Hence, employing logic which
is to determine my thoughts and actions has helped me come this far in my life, where I am a few
weeks close to acquiring my associate degree. Furthermore, I live the kind life I live because I do
think it is the best life possible, at least for me. And that is the importance of philosophy in our
life to analyze and evaluate different situations and ideas.
Furthermore, there are five branches of philosophy such as metaphysics, epistemology,
ethics, politics, and aesthetics. Among the five branches of philosophy, the most likely suits my
interest or goals is the ethics that deals with moral issues, including questions about what is right
(or wrong) to do and other intangibles, such as whether the intentions behind an action determine
its goodness, or whether the actual outcome is what is important.
Being a business student, ethics is the most important component to be successful in the
business field. Through our decisions, ethics guide us to make the world a better place. Business
ethics are just as vital as personal ethics. Businessmen play a unique role and bear a significant
deal of responsibility for shaping the ethical culture of their businesses and thereby influence
their broader communities as well. Entrepreneurs may not want to create their company's ethical
culture, but they inevitably do. For example, the few questions to consider to bring ethics into
our business mindset are how do I define the common good for my business? What does it mean
for my customers, my employees, the community where my business is located, my investors,
and my supporters? How do I make good ethical decisions? How do I analyze a situation and
make a decision that positively contributes to the common good?
Even adopting ethics into your business mindset will help you in approaching
circumstances in more ethical way. If you're not sure how to start building an ethical culture in
your business, leading by example is a good starting point. It's as easy as being good and doing
good.
