Case Questions

1. How would you describe the gap between Elaine’s expectations and her reality and what
is the impact on her stress level?
As it mentioned that Ellaine was being stressed because of his not being able to attend his son’s
basketball match. He want to attend it but yet the reality was he couldn’t as he was also stressed
form his work. Elaine would have collaborated with a proposal team putting together such a big
proposal but, since the economic down turn hit, ABC has had to make significant cuts in its staff.

2. How would you describe the gap between Ted’s expectations and his reality and what is
the impact on his stress level?
Ted started with ABC 25 years ago. He was involved in some best projects. He always enjoyed
developing the company. Recently he has found himself spending more time on administrative
tasks and less on nurturing the growth of younger engineers. In reality Ted hasn’t even had time
to explain it to the other members of the firm.

3. What factors might be driving these gaps for ABC Engineering (hint: think about the
engagement model)?

4. What actions can ABC Engineering take to close the expectation gap and reduce workplace
stress?
Actions that can ABC Engineering take to close the expectation gap is of ABC Civil Engineering
cut 35% of its staff and to reduce workplace stress ABC Engineering , there were fewer new
projects but there was no shortage of work to do - RFPs, change orders, marketing strategy plans
and providing existing customers with better service.

5. List three personal actions either Elaine or Ted can take to reduce their personal stress.
1. Eat healthily: Eating healthily can reduce the risks of diet-related disease. There is a
growing amount of evidence showing how food affects our mood40 and how eating
healthily can improve this. You can protect your feelings of wellbeing by ensuring that
your diet provides adequate amounts of brain nutrients such as essential vitamins and
minerals, as well as water.
2. Implementing proper time management technique: Elaine or Ted can make a daily list
of activities to be performed in a day, prioritize activities by urgency, scheduling
activities and knowing most productive time in a daily cycle and accomplish the most
challenging activity during that time.
3. Relaxing training: Elaine or Ted can reduces their stress by doing meditation, yoga.
These help to relax their body and mind. Meditation lets them to isolate them from the
real and stressful world, thus helping them to o have a peace in mind. Deep relaxation for
15 to 20 minutes a day releases tension.

6. What expectation/reality gaps exist in your organizations that are creating stress?
Most of the time, stress comes from within the organizations itself. Many employees have been
found to experience a high level of stress due to some reasons.

7. What successful stress reduction actions have you seen individuals or organizations take in
the past?
Individual approaches is individual are responsible to reduce their stress levels as most of the
time the stress comes from their personal life such as family problem or financial problem. The
ways to reduce stress may include:

III. Setting realistic goals
