ASSIGNMENT 4

H06 Health Records Management

Part A: HIM & AHIMA
As a health care provider, it is critical that we have protocols and processes in place to

guarantee that all patient information is up to date and easily available while also

ensuring security. Patient care, as well as ensuring that patients get appropriate treatment,

all begins with paperwork. We may do this by following the health information mass

management principles established by the American Health Information Management

Association (AHIMA), also known as the American Health Information Management

Society. Health care personnel also have access to Health Information Management,

which is referred to as HIM. Information management in the healthcare field refers to the

activity of obtaining, analysing, and safeguarding digital and conventional medical

information that is critical to delivering high-quality patient-centered care.

In order to become what it is today, the American Health Information Management

Association (AHIMA) has a long and illustrious history. The American Health

Information Management Association (AHIMA) was established in 1928 with the

mission of assisting in the improvement of the quality of clinical records. This

organisation is constantly evolving. The American Hospital and Medical Association

(AHIMA) expanded its purpose in 1991 to include treatment outside of the hospital, with

the goal of delivering great care across the whole continuum of health care. The

American Health Information Management Association is aiming to expand its usage of

electronic health records. They do this by keeping all HIM experts up to date on any

changes via the provision of seminars, online education, and a variety of other resources.

1
One of the objectives of the American Health Information Management Association

(AHIMA) is to "Empower consumers to maximise their health via management of their

personal health information" (AHIMA.org). Working toward this goal would imply that,

one day, all patient health information will be safely transferred between locations and

providers, regardless of where they were seen. This is in place and readily accessible to

ensure that they get the treatment they need quickly. This will alleviate the concern that a

medicine or medical condition would go unreported, resulting in a more serious medical

issue.

Part B: Recent & Future Technological Changes

The provision of correct treatment is a vital component of the health-care industry, and

documentation is the most significant component of this. It is essential that the

documentation be current and correct. The American Health Information Management

Association (AHIMA) has been working on Clinical Documentation Improvement

initiatives that will increase the quality of clinical documentation. It will lower risks,

assist health care professionals in preparing for audits, and give a window into the quality

of treatment that patients are getting if clinical documentation is more accurate. These

systems are already being applied in the healthcare profession, and it seems that they are

resulting in more timely and accurate treatment.

Clinical Documentation Improvement initiatives are a critical component of patient care

in the modern day. In the case of our 30-year-old male patient who has been diagnosed

with HIV/AIDS, it is critical that his information be carefully recorded in order to

facilitate future consultations. Because of AHIMA, his records will be updated every time

he is admitted to a facility, and the medical staff will be able to see what tests have been

2
conducted in the past and utilise those findings to assist them monitor his diagnosis in the

future. His insights will also assist health care specialists in determining what has

benefited his condition and what has impeded his condition in order to better assist other

persons suffering from this ailment.

The availability of electronic medical records and the ease with which they may be

accessed will revolutionise healthcare for both patients and doctors. Because technology

is always evolving, it has had an impact on all vocations in the healthcare industry. The

technical advancements seem to be mind-blowing across the board. The most visible

technical breakthrough would be the widespread use of computers and laptops by

providers in their daily work environments. The patient's background information is

gathered while the patient is seated with the doctor. When all information about the

patient is entered into the system, it results in a more accurate documentation system. The

nurse or provider has the ability to ask questions and record what the patient is saying at

any given time.

An important step forward is being taken by the American Health Information

Management Association in the healthcare area. It is possible to continue to make

breakthroughs by continuing to make changes, so alleviating some of the everyday

problems that many healthcare practitioners and staff members face. Due to the large

number of data being converted from paper to electronic format, health information

management is becoming more important in the healthcare profession. This improves

office file systems, and in the near future, paper records will no longer be required.
