Patterns of Development – logical ways to organize an entire textor individual

paragraphs and sections of a text.

Writers are very careful to structure their texts for both connection to the audience and

meeting a specific purpose. Recognizing patterns of development helps you analyze a

text and how the individual or constituent parts fit together.

Narration - the most basic pattern of development - describes how, when, and where an

event or occurrence actually happened - used to tell a story or focus on a set of related events

Narration tells a story. It relates an incident or a series of events

Narration tells a story. It relates an incident or a series of events that leads to a conclusion

or ending. It tells the readers when, where, and what happened.

LESSON

Pattern of Development

( Narration)

In this module, you are expected to:

1. Understand the nature and process of narrating stories, whether their own or someone else’s,

whether real or fiction.

2. Create a full-blown essay using narration as the primary mode of paragraph development.

A narrative paragraph contains action verbs and transition words that indicate

time or sequence.

The following are some transition words used to signal time or sequence order:

first, second, etc. After, next, then, eventually, soon, meanwhile, a short time later

during, at the same time, simultaneously, suddenly, instantly, momentarily, the next

day, following, thereafter, in the end, ultimately

Narration is usually used in the humanities. In a writing class, for instance, you can write about

a particular event or situation.

Narration Example

After eating a big bowl of his favourite pasta, he sat on a sofa in my study and read
his science textbook as I wrote at my desk. We both enjoyed this simple yet profound

togetherness, the two of us focused on our own projects yet palpably connected. As we

worked under the soft glow of paper lanterns, with the heat on high and our little dog snoring

at his feet, my son began to relax. I could feel a shift as he began to remember, deep in his

body, that he was home, that he was safe, that he did not have to brace to protect himself from

the expectations of the outside world
