LETTER FROM THE EDITORS

Jessica Seo
Hi, I'm Jessica and this is my first year as a Nuntius editor and this
Nuntius is my first issue of the Nuntius ever. I'm so grateful that I
got an amazing chance to create a Nuntius for NJ-JCL this year and
I'm very excited for the future Nuntii I will make throughout the
year. I hope you can take time looking at these pictures and
recalling the fun memories from the events. Thank you so much to
everyone who contributed in making this Nuntius.

Shawn Smith

Hello, I'm Shawn and this is my first year as an NJ-JCL Officer.

Jessica and I are both serving as the Nuntius editors for the 2021-
2022 year and this is also the first Nuntius I've ever contributed to
creating before. We hope that you enjoy this edition of the
Nuntius and learn new important information regarding NJ-JCL.
Hopefully, you enjoy reminiscing over the fun memories we've had
at National Convention this past summer as well as our October
game night. Also, we hope you take the time to get to know all of
our NJ-JCL officers who dedicate their time towards making NJ-JCL
as enjoyable as it can possibly be for its members. We would love
to hear your feedback and suggestions regarding the Nuntius for
our future newsletters this season. If you have any feedback,

2021 NATIONAL CONVENTION

By Shawn Smith, Nuntius editor

The 2021 NJCL National Convention was my second experience attending the
National Convention - I also attended the previous year’s National Convention.
Considering that the National Convention was virtual, I would have expected
the event to lack some enthusiasm. However, this was not the case at all.
There were many people there from throughout the country who excitedly
participated in different events, making the most out of the virtual experience.
While everyone focuses on the disadvantages of a virtual format, there is no
reason that a virtual convention can’t provide as much excitement as a typical
convention. The planners of the National Convention planned a convention
with several compelling components. Open Certamen was still in action with 4
different teams for the Latin II level, which I am a part of, who competed in a
round-robin style competition. My team ended up making the final round,
thanks to the great help of my teammates but ended up being eliminated.
However, participating in the experience was still fun and the final round was
live-streamed on the NJCL YouTube channel. Open Certamen was my favorite
event from the Convention, but I also had a great time participating in the
service project where we had to construct a decorative rock (or draw on a
piece of paper if we didn’t have a rock) in memory of a girl who was murdered.
It was nice listening to the relaxing music they played in the background while
doing something helpful after a tragic event along with all of the other NJCL
members. Also, even though we couldn’t meet each other in person, we were
still able to get to know a little bit about one another. It was also fun listening
to some of the other Junior Classical Leagues from each state at the end of
each day and watching them show off their spirit. We had the opportunity to
meet some of the NJCL officer candidates and hear about their goals to
innovate the NJCL for the future. Overall, the National Convention was still a
very fun and enjoyable experience. While the plan is for an in-person
Convention in the summer of 2022, I would highly recommend the experience
whether the Convention is virtual or not.

2021 NATIONAL CONVENTION

Sungwon Chung, Consul

This year was the first ever national convention that I attended, and I didn’t know
what to expect from it. However, the NJCL convention was definitely one of the
highlights of my summer this year, as I enjoyed attending many of the intriguing
seminars as well as meeting lots of new people. One of the most interesting
Seminars for me was one about surgical procedures in ancient Rome, and the
complexity of their tools and procedures surprised me quite a bit. The bonding
sessions where we met other state officers and attendees were a good time for
everyone to relax, have fun, and get to know one another. Overall, seeing all the
people gathered have such a powerful spirit for Latin which connected all of us
who would have otherwise never known each other is a very heartwarming
realization to come by, and the fact that countless hours of Zoom could fly by so
quickly can in and of itself prove just how wonderful of an experience National
Convention is! I very highly encourage and recommend everyone to attend and
participate in all of the exciting events offered. If a virtual convention could be so
good, it makes me wonder just how amazing it will be when everyone is together
physically and sharing high energy and spirit with one another!

Shree Manivel, Parlimentarian

As the 2021 National Convention was my second NJCL online convention, I value
the efforts being made to preserve the fun and passion surrounding not only the
State Convention, but Nationals as well. Though we couldn’t meet in person, I
cherished every event hosted by the NJCL, from the mixers to the state fellowships
and academic contests. I’m only optimistic for the future of what we can bring
about this year!

NJ-JCL OCTOBER GAME NIGHT

By Andrew Gu (Northern Registrar)

I’m Andrew Gu and I’m the Northern

Registrar for the NJ-JCL. On October
22, 2021, we held a statewide virtual
game night over Zoom that around
30 members attended. Events
included Skribbl.io games,
GeoGuessr and a Halloween themed
Kahoot!. Attendants were given a
certain amount of points based on
how well they placed in each event
and at the end of the night the three
highest scores were given a $5
Amazon gift card as a reward.
Students Sophia Lund, Michael
Reyes, and Jade Lee placed in the
top three for the night.

October Game Night Flyer

As one of the registrars, I led the

event and it was a GREATTTT
experience. We were able to
overcome a few technical difficulties
such as with some people’s accounts
on GeoGuessr. Being able to connect
with Latin students across the state
was very rewarding. It was my first
time leading an event and I felt
pressure. It was a little nerve-racking
at first, but as I saw my peers having
fun, it all came naturally. Even though
this event was over Zoom, I had a
blast at the event. I can’t wait to see
everyone in person next year!
