A. The world’s environment is deteriorating due to humans’ actions and
behaviour. 2 The artificial light is getting brighter and broader every year and
resulting in the “loss of night “in many countries. 3 The soil is under pressure
from population growth, pollution, and higher demand of land use for other
than food production. 4 At this moment, there are plenty of organisations who
are trying to ensure that there is enough food for the growing population. 5 In
addition, the ocean has been severely damaged by human activities that
dump their wastes through drains and rivers.

school. 2 At other times, women were kept from attending school, despite their

obligatory. 5 The law requires students who are between six and 16 years of
age to attend school.

recent. 5 Finally, indicate that your references are easily accessible upon
request.

With more than fifty feature films Alfred Hitchcock remains one of the most
popular directors of all time. 2 Hitchcock's films draw heavily on both fear and
fantasy. 3 He began directing in the United Kingdom. 4 They often portray
innocent people caught up in circumstances beyond their understanding. 5
The movie Rebecca, which evokes the fears of a young bride, is a good
example of this.

F. Some research and reports from educators suggest that single-sex
education can broaden the educational prospects for both girls and boys. 2
Advocates claim co-ed schools tend to reinforce gender stereotypes, while
single-sex schools can break down gender stereotypes. 3 For example, girls
are free of the pressure to compete with boys in male-dominated subjects
such as math and science. 4 Boys, on the other hand, can more easily pursue
traditionally “feminine” interests such as music and poetry. 5 Some boys are
more adept at technical and vocational education.

G. 1 Within Hong Kong, a number of factors help the development of trade. 2 The

industrialists have to overcome or learn to live with is the shortage of land and
the high price which must be paid for suitable manufacturing sites. 5 Income
tax, too, is more favourable than in some of the countries with which Hong
Kong must compete in the search for overseas markets.

There are many types of pets in an average household. 2 People will often
even choose pets according to their personalities. 3 Some people like small
dogs that are easy to take care of and do not demand a lot of attention. 4
Some owners prefer strong or vicious dogs, like bulldogs for example. 5 Other
people might like cats because they are independent and really need no
attention at all. 6 Birds provide people with a lot of company, if you like bird
songs, but their cages need a lot of cleaning. 7 A fish tank is great to look at
but the tanks must be cleaned often as well. 8 Some people even treat their
plants like pets and talk to them. 9 In a zoo, large animals, like polar bears, are
left to themselves in their cages.

In the fast-paced world of today, subliminal advertising has become an
industry by itself. 2 Together with the support of research and technology, it
has evolved to an overwhelming extent. 3 Subliminal messages can be of two
types: auditory and visual. 4 Studies indicate that these types of advertising
can lead to antisocial behaviour, early sex stimulation, cultural change,
suicidal acts and even drug use. 5 With competition so cut-throat and high in
the air, marketers turn to this genre of promotion, to overpower their target
market by targeting its subconscious psyche to exercise greater control on the
consumer. 6 Brands are forever in a quest to attain brand loyalty from their
target market so that they do not switch to some other brand.

The cloning of genes has made many medical advances possible. 2 Human
growth hormone (HGH) is a good example. 3 This hormone stimulates the
growth of bones and muscles during childhood. 4 Cloning the gene for HGH
has provided an increase in the availability of the hormone. 5 The hormone is
used widely to treat children with dwarfism, a condition that results in an adult
height of 4'10'' or shorter. 6 There have been several television shows recently
about individuals with dwarfism. 7 These shows are very popular. 8 However,
the availability of HGH and other products of biotechnology raises an ethical
question. 9 Should HGH be available to anyone who wants taller children or
only those who have children with dwarfism? 10 Doctors do not have any
evidence that exposure to HGH affects average-size children negatively, but
many feel it is unethical to provide it to children with no serious medical need.
