How to Store Your Food Properly in the Fridge?

When storing food in the fridge, you must remember some important tips to make sure your
food is fresh and safe to eat.
It is always better to store meat, fish and chicken in the freezer. Keeping food cold
slows down the growth of bacteria and freezing can even kill some. Always wrap food well.
You can use special freezer bags or aluminium foil. You can also store food in good quality
containers with tight-fitting lids. Do not store it in cheap plastic containers as they crack
easily. Well wrapped-up raw meat can stay fresh in the freezer almost indefinitely but do not
keep it for too long. It tends to lose its flavour.
Be warned if you store meat, fish or chicken in the fridge as these foods cannot last
for long because the temperature is not cold enough. If the meat or chicken feels slimy or
has a foul odour, throw it out! It is far better to store such food in the freezer.
When you thaw meat, fish or chicken, make sure you cook it as soon as it is thawed.
Never refreeze thawed meat because bacteria will have started to grow. Besides, the quality
is affected if food is thawed and then refrozen.
We also need to make sure that the bacteria do not spread from one food to another.
Therefore, never overload the fridge with too many things. This increases the temperature
inside the fridge. Never keep cooked food below raw food to reduce the risk of raw juices
running onto cooked food. The food that spoils easily such as raw fish, chicken or meat must
always be stored in the coldest part of the fridge, usually just below the ice box of the fridge.
Nonetheless, it is still better to store it in the freezer.
You may keep your fruits and vegetables in the salad bar or crisper which Is
moderately cold. But do not keep them for more than a week as their freshness will be
affected. Most fruits and vegetables are best kept in their raw, unwashed and unpeeled
state. However, if you do peel or slice them, use them up immediately. The longer you
leave them, the greater the danger of contamination.
There are other tips to keep your food safe. For example wash eggs before storing
them in the fridge. Then, if you open a can of fruits, do not leave the opened can in the
fridge. The metal may react with the food so always transfer canned food into a separate,
non-metallic container.
