Question-1(a) A group of students, 100 students know Hindi, 45 know English
and 30 know both.
Each of the students knows either Hindi or English. How many students are
there in the
group?

Ans:- and H be the set of all students who know Hindi.

Number of students who know Hindi = n(H) = 100
Number of students who know english = n(E) = 45
Number of students who know both Hindi and English=n(H cap )
=30
Since, each of the students know Hindi or English
Number of students in group
= Number of students who know Hindi or English
=n(H cup E)
We know that n ( 4 cup E)=n(H)+n(E)-n(H cap E. = 100 + 45 - 30
=115
Hence, there are 115 students in the group.

Question-2(a)There are 15 boys and 10 girls in your class. A four member

committee is to be formed
from the students of your class. In how many ways this can be done if the
committee
consists of at least three girls?

Ans:- In the committee there should be at least three girls and it means that in
the committee can be three or
four girls. So the number of ways to form the committee will be the sum of the
number of ways to do it
with 3 of 10 girls and 1 of 15 boys and the number of ways with 4 of 10 girls
and no boys.
The number of ways to choose 3 of 10 girls and 1 of 15 boys will be
𝐶10
3
∗ 𝐶15
1 = 1800
The number to choose 4 of 10 girls will be
𝐶10
4 = 210
And the total number of ways to form the committee is
𝐶10
3
∗ 𝐶15
1 + 𝐶10
4 = 1800 + 210 = 2010.
Answer: 2010.

Questions-3(a)If the ratio of three sides of a triangle is a: b: c = 7:8:9 then

show that cosA: cosB:
cosC=14: 11: 6.

Ans:- Using cosine rule,

cos A = (b ^ 2 + c ^ 2 - a ^ 2)/(2bc)
cos B = (a ^ 2 + c ^ 2 - b ^ 2)/(ac)
cos C = (b ^ 2 + a ^ 2 - c ^ 2)/(2ab)

We have,
a:b:c =7:8:9
a=7k,b=8k,c=9k

cos A = (8k ^ 2 + (9k) ^ 2 - (7k) ^ 2)/(2 * 8k * 9k)

=⅔

cos B = (7 ^ 2 + 9 ^ 2 - 8 ^ 2)/(2 * 7 * 9)
= 11/21

cos C = (7 ^ 2 + 8 ^ 2 - 9 ^ 2)/(2 * 7 * 8)
=2/7
Therefore:- cos A :cos B:cos c=14:11:6

Questions-4(b)The sum of first three terms of a Geometric Progression is

13/12 and their product is –1.
Find Geometric Progression G.P.

Ans:- Let the first three numbers of the given G.P. a/r be a and ar
Therefore:- Product of the G.P.=-1
a^ 3 =-1
a=-1
Similarly, Sum of the G.P= 13/12
a/r +a+ar= 13/12
Substituting the value of a=-1.

- 1/r - 1 - r = 13/12
12r^ 2 +25r+12=0
12r^ 2 +16r+9r+12=0
(4r+3)(3r+4)=0
r=- 3/4 ,- 4/3

Hence, the G.P. for a = - 1 and r = - 3/4 is 4/3, - 1 and ¾

And, the G.P. for a = - 1 and r=- 4/3
Is ¾, -1 and 4/3

Questions-5(b)The product of three terms of a GP is 512. If 8 is added to the

first term and 6 to the
second term, find the new terms form an AP.

Ans:-Let a/r, a, ar be the terms in GP.

Then product = (a/r)a(ar) = 512
a3 = 512
So a = 8
(a/r)+8 , a+6, ar are in AP.
8/r + 8, 14, 8r are in AP.
So 28 = 8/r + 8 + 8r
20 = 8/r + 8r
20r = 8+8r2
8r2-20r+8 = 0
2r2-5r+2 = 0
(2r-1)(r-2) = 0
r = ½ or r = 2
When r = ½, the numbers are 16, 8, 4.
When r = 2, the numbers are 4, 8, 16.
