INTRODUCTION

This lesson will focus on solving corresponding parts of congruent triangles applying the
postulates and theorems that you have learned in previous lessons. Two triangles are congruent if
and only if all their corresponding parts are congruent.

A. Determine the corresponding sides/angles of the following triangles.

a) 𝐺𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑛: 𝛥𝐴𝐵𝐶 ≅ 𝛥𝑃𝑄𝑅
b) 𝐺𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑛: 𝛥𝑆𝑇𝐸 ≅ 𝛥𝑅𝑂𝐹
c) 𝐺𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑛: 𝛥𝐿𝐴𝑆 ≅ 𝛥𝑅𝐸𝐹
d) 𝐺𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑛: 𝛥𝐻𝑂𝑃 ≅ 𝛥𝐿𝐸𝑇
e) 𝐺𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑛: 𝛥𝐶𝑂𝑅 ≅ 𝛥𝐾𝐸𝐿

B. Solve for x.
a) 8𝑥 + 4 = 10𝑥 b) 3𝑥 − 30 = 𝑥 + 10 c) 2𝑥 + 20 = 3𝑥

In solving the corresponding parts of congruent triangles, see to it first if the two triangles are
congruent and what are the corresponding sides and corresponding angles that are congruent. Apply
your previous knowledge about the theorems and postulates of triangle congruence. Remember, we
have ASA (Angle-Side-Angle), SAS (Side-Angle-Side), SSS (Side-Side-Side), AAS (Angle-Angle-Side). With
your previous knowledge about these postulates and theorems it will be easy for you to solve
corresponding sides of congruent triangles.

Note: “Corresponding Parts of Congruent Triangles are Congruent. (CPCTC)

Illustrative examples:

1) Find the measure of each side of the triangle.

Given: 𝜟 𝑷𝑸𝑹 ≅ 𝜟 𝑺𝑻𝑼

Since the two triangles are congruent, meaning their corresponding sides are also congruent. It
follows that ̅̅̅̅
𝑃𝑄 ≅ ̅𝑆𝑇
̅̅̅, ̅̅̅̅
𝑃𝑅 ≅ ̅̅̅̅
𝑆𝑈,and ̅̅̅̅
𝑄𝑅 ≅ ̅̅̅̅
𝑇𝑈 and it means that their measures are equal. Thus, we

can say that 𝑃𝑄 = 𝑆𝑇, 𝑃𝑅 = 𝑆𝑈,and 𝑄𝑅 = 𝑇𝑈. To find the measure of each side, we must know the
value of x such that we can substitute the value of x to each side of the triangles.

Since:
𝑃𝑄 = 𝑆𝑇, 𝑃𝑅 = 𝑆𝑈, and 𝑄𝑅 = 𝑇𝑈
4𝑥– 5 = 3𝑥 + 30 4𝑥 − 10 = 3𝑥 + 25 5𝑥 − 35 = 4𝑥 Substitute from the sides
of the triangles
Choose any of the equations to find the value of x: (Hint: Choose simple equation. @ 𝑄𝑅 = 𝑇𝑈)
5𝑥 − 35 = 4𝑥 since 𝑄𝑅 = 𝑇𝑈 (Your target to have only 𝒙 at the left side of the equation)
5𝑥 − 4𝑥 = 35 Addition Property of Equality (Add +𝟑𝟓 and −𝟒𝒙 both sides)
𝒙 = 𝟑𝟓 Since 𝟓𝒙 − 𝟒𝒙 = 𝒙.

Since x = 35, substitute to each side of the triangle like: Do the same process for all the
̅̅̅̅ ) = 4𝑥 − 5
(𝑃𝑄 Since 𝒙 = 𝟑𝟓, replace 𝒙 with 𝟑𝟓. sides of the triangle.
= 4(35) − 5 Solve. ̅̅̅̅) = 𝟒𝒙 − 𝟏𝟎 (𝑸𝑹
(𝑷𝑹 ̅̅̅̅) = 𝟓𝒙 − 𝟑𝟓
= 140 − 5 = 4(35) − 10 = 5(35) − 35
= 135 Final Answer for side ̅̅̅̅
𝑃𝑄 . = 140 − 10 = 175 − 35
= 130 = 140
And so,
̅̅̅̅
𝑃𝑄 = 135, ̅̅̅̅
𝑃𝑅 = 130, ̅̅̅̅
𝑄𝑅 = 140, Since the two triangles are congruent, it follows that:
̅𝑆𝑇
̅̅̅ = 135, ̅̅̅̅
𝑆𝑈 = 130, ̅̅̅̅
𝑈𝑇 = 140 By CPCTC
(Note: You can try using different equation to show if it arrives at the same value of x)

Another lesson that will help you in this lesson is about the sum of the angles of a triangle. You
have learned that the sum of the measures of a triangle is 180°.

2) Find the measure of the missing angle.

𝒎∠𝑨 + 𝒎∠𝑩 + 𝒎∠𝑪 = 𝟏𝟖𝟎𝟎
𝟔𝟓𝟎 + 𝟓𝟓𝟎 + 𝑿𝟎 = 𝟏𝟖𝟎𝟎
𝟏𝟐𝟎𝟎 + 𝑿𝟎 = 𝟏𝟖𝟎𝟎
𝑿𝟎 = 𝟏𝟖𝟎𝟎 − 𝟏𝟐𝟎𝟎
𝑿𝟎 = 𝟔𝟎𝟎
The measure of angle C is 𝟔𝟎𝟎 .

3) Solve for x, then find the measure of the corresponding angles of the following triangles.

Given: 𝜟𝑨𝑩𝑪 ≅ 𝜟𝑷𝑸𝑹

Since the two triangles are congruent, meaning their

corresponding angles are also congruent. It follows that
∠𝑨 ≅ ∠𝑷, ∠𝑩 ≅ ∠𝑸, and ∠𝑪 ≅ ∠𝑹, which means that their
measures are equal the same as with the sides at example
#1. Thus, we can say that 𝒎∠𝑨 = 𝒎∠𝑷, 𝒎∠𝑩 = 𝒎∠𝑸, and
𝒎∠𝑪 = 𝒎∠𝑹. To find the measure of each angle, we must
find the value of x such that we can substitute it to each
angle of the triangles.

𝒎∠𝑨 = 𝒎∠𝑷, 𝒎∠𝑩 = 𝒎∠𝑸, and 𝒎∠𝑪 = 𝒎∠𝑹

𝑥 + 15 = 3𝑥 − 15 70 = 2𝑥 + 40 2𝑥 + 50 = 3𝑥 + 35 Substitute from the angles
of the triangles
Choose any of the equations to find the value of x: (Hint: Choose simple equation. @ 𝒎∠𝑩 = 𝒎∠𝑸)
70 = 2𝑥 + 40 since 𝒎∠𝑩 = 𝒎∠𝑸 (Your target to have only 𝒙 at the left side)
2𝑥 + 40 = 70 Symmetric Property of Equality (Then, Add −𝟒𝟎 both sides)
2𝑥 = 70 − 40 Simplify.
2𝑥 = 30 Since 70 − 40 = 30. (Divide both sides by two to have x)
𝒙 = 𝟏𝟓 Final value of x.
Find the measure of all angles using the value of x.
Since 𝒙 = 𝟏𝟓, substitute to each angle of the triangle like: Do the same process for all the
(𝑚∠𝑨) = 𝑥 + 15 Since 𝒙 = 𝟑𝟓, replace 𝒙 with 𝟑𝟓. angles of the triangle.
= (15) + 15 Solve. (𝒎∠𝑩) = 𝟕𝟎 (𝒎∠𝑪) = 𝟐𝒙 + 𝟓𝟎
𝒎∠𝑨 = 𝟑𝟎 Final Answer for ∠𝑨 . = 2(15) + 50
= 30 + 50
And so, = 𝟖𝟎
𝒎∠𝑨 = 𝟑𝟎 , 𝒎∠𝑩 = 𝟕𝟎 , 𝒎∠𝑪 = 𝟖𝟎 , Since the two triangles are congruent, it follows that:
𝒎∠𝑷 = 𝟑𝟎 , 𝒎∠𝑸 = 𝟕𝟎 , 𝒎∠𝑹 = 𝟖𝟎 By CPCTC
(Note: You can try using different equation to show if it arrives at the same value of x)

In solving the corresponding parts of congruent triangles,

1. Identify the corresponding parts which are congruent.

2. Equate the algebraic representations of the congruent parts to find the value of the
unknown variable.
3. Substitute the value of the unknown to find the measure of the parts of a triangle.
4. Find the measure of the congruent parts of another triangle by CPCTC or substitute again
the value of the unknown to each part of a triangle.
Remember:
The sum of the interior angles of a triangle is 1800.
