Hey there!

This week we´ll go through the articles, their uses and when to use them.

Hopefully it won´t be a hard topic for you.

SESSION 1: The indefinite article A / An
• First you need to remember that a / an means one and it may refer to a person or a thing.

She works in a bank ✓

She works in bank X

I have got a car ✓

I have got car X

• We use a or an depending on the first letter (or the sound of the letter) of the following word.

We use a before a consonant sound: a banana (starts with /b/)

We use an before a vowel sound: an orange (starts with /o/)

• We use the indefinite article, a/an, with singular nouns when the person who is the listener/reader does
not know exactly what we are referring to:

Police are searching for a 14-year-old girl.

• We also use it to show that the person or thing is one of a group:

She is a pupil at London Road School

• We do not use an indefinite article (a / an) with plural nouns or uncountable nouns:

She was wearing blue shoes. (plural noun)

She has short, blonde hair. (uncountable noun)

• We use the indefinite article, a/an, with singular nouns when the person who is the listener/reader does

SESSION 2: The definite article THE
We use the definite article in front of a noun when we believe the listener/reader knows exactly what we
are referring to:
• because there is only one:
The pope lives in Vatican City
The moon hasn´t come out tonight.
• because there is only one in that context:
Dad, let me borrow the car? (= the car that belongs to our family).
Look at the boy over there. (= the boy I am pointing at).
● because we have already mentioned it:

A young man crashed downtown this morning. The man got seriously injured and was taken to
the hospital.
● We use the definite article with countries whose names include words like kingdom, states or
republic.
The United States of America, The United Kingdom.

• Also with countries which have plural nouns as their names and geographical features, such as
mountain ranges, groups of islands, rivers, seas, oceans and canals.

The Netherlands, The Philipines, The Canary Islands, The Alps

● We do not use the definite article with proper names, but we do when referring to the family.
The Simpsons, The Flanders

• We also use the definite article with:

• Newspapers (The New York times)
• well-known buildings or works of art (The Empire State)

SESSION 3: No article
There are sometimes when you don´t need to use an article in your sentences for example:

• When we refer to general ideas, plurals or uncountable nouns we do not use THE.

• With names of Towns, cities, states and countries.
