NOTING SIGNIFICANT DETAILS ON VARIOUS TEXT TYPES

Background Information:
Reading is a part of our daily activities. We read text messages, signage, stories, news reports and
all other printed materials. These printed materials maybe of great help to us. They may answer your
queries, give solution to your problem, cure an illness (like in a doctor’s prescription), or even provide
direction to one’s destination. Hence, it is very important to know how to note details in a certain text

In this activity sheet, you will be able to enhance your skill in noting details as regards with the
various text types. You will be encountering announcements, recipes, procedures, and other reading
materials followed by questions and exercises. Therefore, read each material carefully and note
details correctly.
Example:
Announcement

QUARTER 1: WEEK 4
STRUCTURE, PURPOSE AND LANGUAGE FEATURES OF DIFFERENT TEXT TYPES:
NARRATIVE, INFORMATION REPORT, PROCEDURE, ARGUMENT Background Information:
Texts are written for different purposes following standards of composition and form. Hence, these
forms of writing are considered as text types.

➢ Narrative is a literary text type that entertains the reader based on fiction. The structure includes
the title, orientation (characters and setting), complication (problem), resolution (solution) and coda
(lesson). It uses nouns, adjectives, verbs, and time expressions.
Examples: short stories, fables, folk tales, myths, legends

➢ Information Report is a factual text type that presents information about a particular subject. The
structure includes an introduction, the body (paragraphs with topic sentence and supporting details)
and a concluding paragraph (optional). It uses present tense verb, linking verbs and general nouns.
Examples: lectures, news articles, reference articles, travelogues

➢ Procedure is a factual text type that gives step-by-step instructions for doing something or even
getting somewhere. The structure includes title, list of materials and steps. Sentences start with
verbs stated as commands. It also uses sequence signals (first, next, then, afterward, finally).
Examples: following recipes, reading instruction manuals, giving directions

➢ Argument is a factual text type that tells you the positive and negative, the good or bad points in a
topic. The structure includes introductory paragraph, body and concluding paragraph. It uses generic
terms followed by specific examples, words that show comparison and contrast, and verbs in the
present tense.
Examples: debates, essays, current affair interviews, letters to the editor

Example: NARRATIVE TEXT TYPE

A Wet Afternoon
It was cloudy that afternoon. It looked like it would rain. Tonio and Lucio were walking home. They
had visited their grandmother who lived on the other side of the rice field.
“Let’s walk fast, Tonio,” Lucio told his brother. “We might be caught in the rain. Mother would be
waiting for us.”
“It’s beginning to rain!” Tonio said as he ran under a tree to take shelter. Lucio followed him.
Soon the rain stopped, and they went on walking. They were already home when it rained again.
Logue, Concordia C., Ferrer, Saturnina R., Condez, Regina R., Capili, Mirriam B. 2009.

➢ The title of the narrative text is A Wet Afternoon.

➢ The orientation introduces the characters Tonio and Lucio and the setting which is on the road as
they were walking home one cloudy afternoon.

5
➢ The complication focuses on the problem of the characters as they were about to get caught in the
rain.

➢ The resolution shows the solution to the problem by taking a shelter under the tree.

➢ The coda emphasizes the lesson to be alert at all times.

Example: INFORMATION REPORT TEXT TYPE

The Need for Sunlight

The sun is our main source of heat and light. Without the sun, no plant or animal can live on earth.
The sun has been giving us heat and light for millions of years and will keep on giving us heat and
light for millions of years more. Without the sun, Earth would be too cold and everything on it would
freeze. Nothing can give heat to Earth as much as the sun does. The sun helps plants to grow.
Without sunlight green plants will not be strong and healthy even if they have enough water, good
soil, and plenty of air. They need sunlight in making their own food, too. Animals, too, can’t live
without sunlight. Most animals eat plants. Even animals that eat other animals cannot live without the
sun because the animals they feed on also depend on plants for food.
Logue, Concordia C., Ferrer, Saturnina R., Condez, Regina R., Capili, Mirriam B. 2009.

➢ The introduction is an overview and in this text, it is the sun as the main source of heat and light.

➢ The body consists of the second and third paragraphs. Each paragraph contains a topic sentence
and supporting details. o Topic sentence for paragraph 2
▪ Without the sun, Earth would be too cold and everything on it would freeze.
o Supporting detail for paragraph 2
▪ Nothing can give heat to Earth as much as the sun does.
o Topic sentence for paragraph 3
▪ The sun helps plants to grow.
o Supporting details for paragraph 3
▪ Without sunlight green plants will not be strong and healthy even if they have enough water, good
soil and plenty of air.
▪ They need sunlight in making their own food, too.

➢ The conclusion is optional as it summarizes or signals the end of the text and in this case, it is
animals, too, can’t live without sunlight.
Example: PROCEDURE TEXT TYPE

Example: ARGUMENT TEXT TYPE
To Rain or Not to Rain?
by Hilda S. Cochon
I love the rain! I love listening to the sound of pitter patter on my roof. I like looking out at my window
while it is raining. It gives me great joy to hear it as long as it is not the destructive type of rain.
But on the other hand, my friend, who commutes from Manila to Angeles, hates the rain. She called
my attention when I said that I love the rain.
She complains how can a person love the rain when it makes everything wet? The bus rides are
uncomfortable because of poor visibility during the rain. Commuting is too difficult because people
are wet all over. More so, wet umbrellas are annoying to hold. She says that rain puddles are
everywhere. She mentions that when cars go fast, rain puddle is splashed to persons passing by.
Even if the rain can do the things she mentioned, I still believe in the beauty of rain. It brings growth
and life as it showers and nourishes the earth with water after a long dry season.

➢ The introductory paragraph tells the positive side of the rain mentioned by the writer.

➢ The body discusses the negative side of rain according to the friend’s point of view.

➢ The concluding paragraph gives the final opinion wherein the writer still believes in the beauty of
the rain.
