OGIVES

Cumulative frequency curves

Ogive is a curve obtained by plotting the cumulative frequencies of statistical distribution on

a graph sheet. There are two ogives

a. Less than ogive: it is obtained by plotting less than cumulative frequencies.

b. More than ogive: it is obtained by plotting more than cumulative frequencies.

1. Draw a less than ogive from the following data

CI 10-20 20-30 30-40 40-50 50-60 60-70

HISTOGRAM

Meaning: A histogram is the most commonly used graph to show frequency distributions. It
looks very much like a bar chart. A histogram is the graphical representation of data where
data is grouped into continuous number ranges and each range corresponds to a vertical bar.

 The horizontal axis displays the number range.

 The vertical axis (frequency) represents the amount of data that is present in each range.
The number ranges depend upon the data that is being used.

1. Represent the following data by histogram

FREQUENCY POLYGON

A frequency polygon is a many sided closed figure. It is constructed by plotting the class
frequencies against their corresponding class marks (mid-points) and then joining the
resulting points by means of straight lines. It can also be obtained by joining the mid points of
the tops of rectangles in the histograms.

1. Draw a histogram and a frequency polygon from the following

X 0-10 10-20 20-30 30-40 40-50 50-60 60-70

F 8 15 25 36 28 10 6
