G. Settlement Plates Illustration

Settlement
Plate

Figure G - Settlement Plate installation locations

H. Settlement Plates Installations

Typical settlement plate is shown in the figure below;

(insert figure)

The base platform is typically made of concrete pad 100mm thick, L=150mm x W=150mm, or can also be
made of steel plate, or plywood.
A reference rod(Riser pipe), with threaded end connections, is attached to the platform. As soil fill is placed
over the settlement plate, additional segments of pipe also can be added if necessary.

Location of Installation of Settlement Plates: 1000mm from edge of Shoulder (Figure G.)
Each settlement plates shall be installed every 300m, from designated locations free from traffic flow.

Settlement Monitoring:
1. Settlement is determined by periodically measuring the elevation of the top of the reference rod.
The elevation of the base platform elevation must be measured before the Embankment
construction begins. Subsequent readings should be taken periodically during the Embankment
construction and to be monitored by the Surveyor, (3x) three times/week, and including the necessary
riser pipes if needed to be attached.
2. Stable benchmarks should be used for a reference elevation datum and should be located away
from all possible vertical movements or traffic movements or any other disturbance. Depending on
the importance of the installations, it may be necessary to use multiple benchmarks for the
redundancy and survey elevations between them at regular intervals for data monitoring.

Waiting Periods:
Waiting periods are used to prevent pavement distress and to allow consolidation settlement to occur
generally after fills over soft soil have been placed.

Duration of waiting periods: To be confirmed by the Engineer.

Monitoring of the actual ground behaviour, with settlement plates, can be used to determine if work
may begin in advance of the minimum waiting period time. It should be noted that if the settlement
is not changing from initial record of data monitoring, the waiting period should be stop.

Site Plan and Location Selection:

Settlement plates should be location such that construction traffic in the vicinity is minimized if at
all possible. Plate installations and riser pipes should be clearly and adequately marked to
protect the riser pipes from impact or obliteration during fill placement by the equipment operators,
grading and other constructions activities that will be on going during the monitroing process.

Survey Data:
The riser pipe should be surveyed to a fixed datum or bench mark well outside the Embankment fill
area. The height of fill should also be surveyed and recorded at each monitoring interval. It is
important that the original installation data and subsequent monitoring data be clearly recorded for
each settlement plate installation. Added sections of riser pipes and their lenghts, should be
clearly log and noted by the Surveyor.

Settlements are relatively very small, surveys should be conducted to the greatest accuracy
reasonably obtainable under field conditions.

Any extreme or unusual events should also be recorded, such us rainstorms, local flooding, and the
like. If the settlement plates are damaged, or replaced, or repaired, it must be also noted and record.

All settlement data should be sent to the Engineer for review and interpretations.

All settlement plates should be marked and numbered accordingly.
