Guide Questions:
1. Where is the hypothetical earthquakes` epicenter?

The hypothetical earthquake’s epicenter is in the middle of the three circles of Carmona, Silang, and GMA.

2. What difficulty will you encounter if you only have data from two recording stations?
If you only have two datas you will have difficulty in encountering the exact location of the epicenter. Because
the method of the triangulation method must have 3 recorded stations.

ASSIMILATION (PAGLALAPAT)
Apply the triangulation method to determine the earthquake epicenter in the given situation: (Learning Task 3
on page 10 of your module).

What should you do?

1. Use the attached map of Cavite (Map 2) You can draw this is a short bondpaper or you can print it.
Follow the procedure indicated in activity 1(Find the epicenter) on page 8 of your module.

2. Draw the location of the epicenter of an earthquake in Carmona, Silang, and GMA (General Mariano
Alvarez)Cavite if the hypothetical distance of the epicenter in Carmona is 300 km, Silang is 200 km, and GMA
is 200 km.
Answer the guide questions in a clean sheet of paper.
Guide Questions:
1. What method is used by seismologists to locate the epicenter by which an earthquake occur? Why?

The method used by seismologists to locate the epicenter in an earthquake is called Triangulation. When
seismic data is collected from at least three different locations, it can be used to determine the epicenter by
where it intersects.

2. What is the importance of recording the times the first (P-waves) and second (S-waves) seismic waves
arrived?

The difference in arrival times between P and S waves can be used to determine the distance between the station
and an earthquake.

REFLECTION
After doing your learning tasks, write your reflection by completing the following phrases: (Use a clean sheet
of pad paper)

I have learned that people that excel in seismology use the triangulation method to find the epicenter of
earthquakes.

I realized that the difference in arrival times between P and S waves  is important because it can be used to
determine the distance between the station and an earthquake.
