Activity 1: A Picture Paint a Thousand Words!

1. Observe the two pictures below and recognize the similarities and the differences between

individuals or animals belonging to the same species. 10 points.

Humans have different races just like dogs
have different breeds. Just like humans, dogs are
also driven by instincts. However, human can also
reason. The children are adorable and so are the
dogs, both species love being showered with
attention and loves playing around with their kind. Humans are bipedal while the dogs are
quadrupedal. Kids are able to express themselves and communicate with each other with
true language, well animals can communicate with each other however, none have the
expressiveness of the human language. Humans and animals both eat, sleep, think, and
communicate. We are also similar in a lot of the ways our bodies work. In summary, the
DNA of each organism is unique to itself.

Activity 2:
Research 5 similar species with different characteristics. 5 points.

Example: One lives in water.

Gartner snakes live in the same
One lives in land.
region.
Snakes Some are venomous
Some are not venomous
Dogs Some are huge
Some are small

Jellyfish Some are deadly poisonous.

Some are harmless.

Birds Some can fly.

Some are unable to fly.

Give examples on the reproductive isolating mechanisms. 5 points.

MECHANISMS EXAMPLES
1. Geographic Isolation 1. Populations of finches found on the different
islands of Galápagos evolved separately and
therefore split into nearly 15 different species.
2. Cheetahs separated from a larger group
mate with each other, resulting in a less varied
gene pool.
3. A mountain range prevents two types of
goat from

GMT -06:00 causing the gene pool to

become less varied.
2. Temporal or Seasonal Isolation 1. The eastern spotted skunk likes to mate in the
fall, while the western spotted skunk likes to mate
in the spring.
2. The American toad mates in the early part of
summer, while the Fowler's toad mates later in
the season.
3. As for species that are temporally isolated
by the timing of the day when they are sexually
active, example are the two fruit fly species.
While the D. persimilis species is generally
active in the early morning, D. pseuoobscura is
active in the afternoon.
3. Behavioral Isolation 1. Birds singing different songs to attract
mates.
2. During the breeding season, frogs descend
to near the ponds and pools, where they breed.
3. Fireflies find mates using distinct patterns of
flashing.
4.. Mechanical Isolation 1. Some species of bushbaby have an
overlapping habitat but can’t interbreed with
one another because the structure of the
genitalia in bushbabies varies from species to
species.
2. A female of one species of snail tries to
mate with the male of another species, their
reproductive organs won’t match with one
another and the two species won’t be able to
mate.
3. Flowering plants that do not have the correct
shape for a pollinator will not receive a pollen
transfer, and will therefore not be fertilized.
5. Gametic Isolation 1. The sea urchins Strongylocentrotus
purpuratus and S. franciscanus can be induced
to release their eggs and sperm
simultaneously, but most of the fertilizations
that result are between eggs and sperm of the
same species.
2. Animals with internal fertilization, sperm
cells may be unable to function in the sexual
ducts of females of different species.
3. Pollen grains of one species typically fail to
germinate on the stigma of another species, so
that the pollen tubes never reach the ovary
where fertilization would occur.
