Section Six: Installing the
Thermocouple
The J-2r is equipped with a special type-K NiCr/

damage to the crucible, and/or damage
to the surrounding parts.

Plug the thermocouple into its socket.

closed, turn on the vacuum pump. 5. Using flask tongs, take the flask from your
burnout oven and place it in the chamber.
Important! Timing is essential; the flask
should be put into the machine just as the
metal melts. When the metal is about 28°C
(50°F) below the melting point, you have
about 20 seconds before the metal is com-
pletely melted. This should be just enough
time to retrieve and insert the flask.

Casting the Flask
1. When the metal is molten and within
a few degrees of set-point temperature,
rotate the stirring rod lever several times
to stir the alloy.
Important! Never attempt to stir
the metal before it is well above its melting
temperature. Any solids remaining in the
crucible may dislocate the sealing rod and
cause molten metal to leak.
Rotate the flask if necessary to improve the vacuum.

If the vacuum is still less than 21 inches/Hg,

remove the flask and replace the flange
gasket or clean the sealing face of the flange
on the flask before proceeding.
7. Swing the flask chamber back under the
crucible chamber and rotate the lifting cam
lever to the right. This will lift and lock the
flask chamber against the crucible chamber.
Rotate the stirring rod to stir the molten alloy.

2. At the moment the metal reaches the

casting set-point, squeeze the sealing
rod handle for five seconds. This lifts
the sealing rod and allows the molten
metal to flow into the flask.

Squeeze the handle to cast the metal.

Close and secure the flask chamber.

3. Release the sealing rod handle.
