Broken Home: how does it affect to academic achievements of students?

Family is said to be the first institution where one stand to equip oneself to
grow. Having healthy family is what everyone’s dream, but many could not be
successful to it, due to different problems. When unwanted things are coming up,
many families have been broken and their children affected especially to their
studies. Broken home occurs as a result of separation of marriage either by death or
divorce. Family is the first child first place of contact and in a world where having
broken home are no longer considered as something heartbreaking, children of this
family experienced hardship of their parents’ separation and also who experience
hardship in studies. Many people do not see broken homes as a social problem,
which somehow affect children born into such homes.

Broken homes can give a negative effect to students who experience it in their
academic achievement. According to NELL (1981), the students may in
approximately one of these situation. The student may find himself being brought up
in a single parental family there is likely to increased financial hardship, all these will
mean in school, students can’t pay school fees that will lead to school problems.
Also, according to FOSUKUN (1954), argued that serious conflict will be arises
between home and school, by this broken homes can also lead to children lack of
motivation by their parents, the parents are unable to provide the basic needs of
children such a support by this student can’t also give more importance to their study
and focus instead to things that are not good to them, things where they can get
motivation, for example hanging out with their friends than going on school.
Sometimes school can’t have contact to student’s parents because of broken homes,
parents can’t give more attention to their children when it comes to the studies.
Physical contact is really important in students, having advices make them better in
managing their schedules (Ekeruche, 1988). Sometimes people around are ignorant
and ask question like asking where is your father or mother when if it’s a family day,
this innocent question forces pain to child because of sad reality of their family
situation. According to Harlow and Harlaw (1963) the children separated from their
parents lead to psychological problems anxiety state, depressive, illness which affect
the learning and interaction ability of the student in the school.

This study is really important because we will able to know the effects of
having broken home in the academic achievement of student, or what cause of
having low academic performance of students. Since there are many students who
experienced broken home, there are also many information that we should know
about to those students who experienced it so that we can give consideration.

Since the topic is personal, one on one interviews is the way the information
collected. Through this methods, the information easily gets and give respect to the
respondents. Getting information by this topic is really hard, especially in finding who
will be our respondents that can participate in this kind of topic.

I discovered that in doing research. Students who has problem in academic

behavior has its own reason by their experienced, just like having a broken home.
People who experienced should give more patient and understanding by the people
that surround that person.

In conclusion, being human we all have limitations and shortcomings, due to

these we used to make problems for other for some time. Family filled with mutual
love and care is the ideal for all of us. But because of such human incapacity, we
cannot succeed it. Then conflicts aroused which caused broken home. There can be
many reasons. There can also be various consequences in every development
stages of life, even in the society. However, it is to be noted that when there is
problem and impact, there is also the solving idea.
