TITLE OF FILM: acclaimed adaptation of Noli Me Tangere (1961)
DIRECTOR: Gerardo "Gerry" De Leon

Gerardo "Gerry" De Leon directed dozens of movies and one of the movies we choose to watch
is the 1961 acclaimed adaptation of Noli Me Tangere. Noli me Tangere, novel by Filipino political
activist and author José Rizal, published in 1887. The book, written in Spanish, is a sweeping and
passionate revealing of the brutality and corruption of Spanish rule in the Philippines.
His films are beautiful because they are historical in the sense that they show stories about events
or happenings from that period. His films' direction is excellent, which is one of the reasons why they
are so successful. We will be able to appreciate his films if we understand or try to understand their
stories.
The story portrays how the Spaniards treat Filipino in their colonization. The male cast is
flawless and exceptional. Male cast; Eddie Del Mar as Crisostomo Ibarra, Oscar Keesee, Jr. as Padre
Damaso, the great Leopoldo Salcedo as Elias. While the female cast was hired not because of their
acting skills but because of their pretty faces. Female cast; Edita Vital as Maria Clara and Lina Carino
as the unfortunate Sisa.
High-tech cameras had not yet been invented at the time, the visual was black and white, which
is one of the reasons why some people disliked watching it. After all, the story shown in the film was
similar to the story written in the book, but he may have changed it slightly. His work must be played in
public so many Filipino can understand the novel by Dr. Rizal. The film is worth seeing because there
are many moral lessons to be learned, even if it may be boring for some people due to its black and
white visual, and some people today, especially children, may not be able to understand it because this
generation is more focused on modern films and stories.
