Subject: Seismic Tank Anchorage per ASCE 7 Section 15.7.5 using post-installed adhesive anchors

The following tables show the capacities for a single anchor bolt designed to comply with ASCE 7 Section 15.7.5
which requires that tank anchors be embedded into the concrete foundations to develop the yield load in the anchor
under cyclic loads in cracked concrete.

In order to develop this steel yield strength in cracked concrete, use ACI 318 Appendix D section D.3.3.5.Determine
the effective embedment, heff, for the bond strength and the concrete breakout strength to develop the expected yield
strength of the steel anchor rod.

Meaning: Na, exp yield < 0.75Nbond and Na, exp yield < 0.75Nconcrete breakout

For demonstration, the following calculations are for Hilti HIT RE-500SD Epoxy Adhesive (ICC ESR 2322) with an
ASTM F 1554 Grade 36 anchor rod in concrete with a minimum compressive strength, f’c = 2,500 psi. Temperature
range A with dry, hammer drilled holes.

The expected steel yield strength of the anchor rods, N a , exp yield  A se  Fy  R y is shown below. Hilti recommends
the Material Over Strength factor Ry = 1.25 based on our testing of threaded anchor material.

For Hilti RE-500 SD, using the bond strength equation D-16a from ICC ESR 2322 for cracked concrete and applying
the 0.75 of ACI 318 Appendix D section D.3.3.3 seismic design, determine the embedment, heff, required to develop
the expected yield strength. The table below shows the results of this calculation.

Using the same embedments required for Adhesive Bond Strength, check the Concrete Breakout Strength, assuming
f’c = 2,500 psi. I am assuming 2500 psi because concrete breakout does not control when looking at a single anchor
rod in cracked concrete. The confirmation is shown in the table below:

The embedments shown in the tables will develop the yield strength of a single ASTM F 1554 gr 36 threaded rod in
for seismic loads in cracked concrete with a minimum compressive strength, f’c = 2,500 psi. The embedment depth
required for these capacities are approximately between 23.3 and 49 times the rod diameter. The scope of ICC ESR
2322 is only up to 20 times the rod diameter. Therefore, in order to meet the design requirements of ASCE 7 Section
15.7.5 the embedment depth needs to be deeper then what is covered in the scope of ICC ESR 2322 for some of the
rods. Also if edge distances, groups of anchors or higher strength rods are considered, the embedment required could
increase beyond 20 rod diameters for all the rod diameters. This is also the case for HIT HIT HY-150 MAX-SD
Adhesive and ICC ESR 3013.

Hilti has done extensive testing and the maximum drilled hole depths recommended for Hilti’s two seismic, cracked
concrete adhesives, HY 150 MAX-SD and RE 500 SD are shown in the following table. These limits come from the
testing done for European Technical Approvals ETA 09/0295 for HIT RE 500 SD and ETA 08/0202 for HY 150 MAX.

(in) HY 150 MAX-SD RE 500 SD
3/8 39 39
1/2 39 50
5/8 59 62.5
3/4 75 75
7/8 79 87.5
1 79 100
1 1/4 --- 125

It is Hilti’s Engineering Judgment that using the ACI 318 Appendix D Strength Design method (shown above), of
checking the calculated Bond Strength and Concrete Breakout Strength to the Steel Expected Yield Strength for
embedments deeper then 20 rod diameters is prudent; the embedment depth should not exceed the depths listed in
the table above.
