Foreword

After Richard Dawkins and I appeared in the movie The Unbelievers I

began to get mail from people in small communities who had seen the movie and

thanked us for making it. On their own they had begun questioning God’s

existence, and they felt alone, and because of the teachings of those around

them, they also felt guilty. When they saw the movie they realized they were not

alone, that it is ok to question, and that people can lead full, good lives, without

believing in God.

I think that is one of the reasons this book of quotes will be useful.

Reading the collections of intelligent, witty, and provocative quotes by well-

known individuals from all walks of life may help many people realize that some

of their role models also question myth and superstition, that they are not alone.

Perhaps this will provide strength to continue reading and questioning, and some

of the quotes may prove to be useful to help spur discussions that open minds.
Most importantly, many of these insightful quotes, many of which were

also new to me, can get you thinking in new ways about the world, and that of

course is the great virtue of literature, and science. I am happy Daniel Farcas

compiled these, and hope you enjoy them.

Lawrence M. Krauss 2021.

That moment when I, Daniel Farcas started to doubt…

I can still vividly remember; we were all sitting by my grandfather’s death

bed while he was taking his last breaths. It was a painful and quiet moment; we

were all crying inside and all of us had tears rolling down from our eyes.

“Please grandpa don’t die” my eleven-year-old mind said out loud.

His eyes were looking somewhere above us all while closing slowly.

“Don’t worry Daniel!” he whispered, “I can see the heavens up there… and

the love of my life Emma…she is waiting for me up there…”

“What are you taking about grandpa?” I asked, “Grandma is right here!” He

never replied, as he was passing into the unknown, talking his very last breath.

“Burn in hell you infidel!” my grandma yelled, steaming with rage.

Later, we found that the girl my grandfather was taking about was a

summer love, short but intense that he had in college, well before he even met

my grandmother. I found out that according to neurologists when the human

brains prepare to die it starts playing back good memories, like they say, “your life

flashes before your eyes.” My grandmother remained lividly mad at him for the

rest of her life. She used to say often: “When I die and go to heaven, I am going

to make his life a living hell!”

Here we begin…

1. “We are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed

in. Some of us just go one god further.” Richard Dawkins

2. “Every atom in your body came from a star that exploded. And the atoms

in your left hand probably came from a different star than your right hand. It

really is the most poetic thing I know about physics: You are all stardust. You

could not be here if stars hadn’t exploded, because the elements - the carbon,

nitrogen, oxygen, iron, all the things that matter for evolution and for life -

weren’t created at the beginning of time. They were created in the nuclear

furnaces of stars, and the only way for them to get into your body is if those

stars were kind enough to explode. So, forget Jesus. The stars died so that you

could be here today.” Lawrence M. Krauss

3. “The truth has nothing to fear from inquiry." Matt Dillahunty

4. “When a man is freed of religion, he has a better chance to live a normal

whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?“

Epicurus

8. “God is a mental disorder like any other.” Mecha Constantine

9. “Owners of dogs will have noticed that, if you provide them with food and

water and shelter and affection, they will think you are god. Whereas owners of

cats are compelled to realize that, if you provide them with food and water and

shelter and affection, they draw the conclusion that they are gods.” Christopher

Hitchens

10. “That which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without

evidence.” Christopher Hitchens
