Introduction

Self-Service Technologies (SSTs) are commonplace in modern consumers' daily lives (Lowe et al., 2019), and they offer retailers new methods to connect
and empower customers while saving money (Inman and Nikolova, 2017; Roy et al., 2018; Wang, 2018). Self-service checkout systems (Bulmer et al., 2018),
portable self-scanning devices (Marzocchi and Zammit, 2006), mobile wallets (Singh and Singh, 2020), artificial intelligence (Pillai et al., 2020), and
automated social presence through robots are all examples of SSTs being used in retail businesses (Van Doorn et al., 2017). As a result, it's not unexpected
to see merchants all over the world employing in-store technology to improve service quality, customer happiness, and loyalty, as well as save costs and
improve operational efficiencies (Fernandes and Pedroso, 2017; Kazancoglu and Yarimoglu, 2018).
According to BBC news, Aldi has established its first checkout-free supermarket in an effort to cut down on lines and make shopping more convenient. To
support this, the supermarket has released a new software – the Shop & Go app – at its Greenwich, South East London shop (Sritharan, 2022). Aldi's goal is
to remove long lines at its stores, following in the footsteps of the Co-op, Tesco, and Sainsburys, who have launched checkout-free locations in England, and
Amazon, which has locations in the UK and throughout the world (Sritharan, 2022).
Tesco, Sainsbury's, and Asda are the three biggest supermarkets, with smaller retailers such as Iceland, Waitrose, Aldi, and Lidl competing in the same
market. The introduction of internet shopping and the proliferation of convenience shops around the country have fueled this trend. We are seeing a surge
in Self-Service Technologies in practically all of the major and smallest supermarket chains recently among the new technologies offered in the supermarket
business. With the implementation of Self-Service Technologies in supermarkets, these economic and technological innovations have not only
revolutionized the sector, but have also changed customer buying habits.
This study aims to determine if the development of Self-Service Technologies in the Aldi grocery business has benefited customers. It also aims to evaluate
the many limits and challenges that customers confront while adopting this new technology.
