RATIONAL NUMBERS IN FRACTION & DECIMAL & VICE - VERSA

Rational number is written in the form a / b, where a and b are integers and b is
not equal to zero. Both fractions and decimals are called rational numbers. Fractions
when changed to decimals, can either be terminating, non – terminating, or repeating
decimals. Terminating decimal is a decimal that has an end. Non – terminating decimal
is a decimal that has no end. Repeating decimal is a decimal that has digit or digits that
kept on repeating.

Situation: Mary goes early to church everyday day for a mass. Today, 5/8 of the
churchgoers came to church early to attend the 5:00pm mass.

Example 1: Change each given fraction to a decimal.

a. 3/8

b. 2/9

c. 4/19

Example 2: Change each decimal to a fraction.

a. 0.35

b. 0.275

c. 0.555…

d. 0.5757…

e. 0.51245245…

f. 0.04375375…

Terminating decimal represents a fraction where the remainder is zero. A

repeating decimal represents a fraction in which a pattern digit or digits repeat itself or
themselves infinitely. A non – terminating decimal represents a fraction when a
numerator is divided by a denominator with a remainder.
OPERATIONS WITH NON – INTEGERS

Situation: Jerry does errand for his father. Yesterday, his father sent him to the
market to buy 3/5 of pork and ¾ kilogram of pork this morning. How many kilograms of
pork did Jerry buy for his father?

To be able to find the answer, we need to add the two fractions. In the given situation,
the two fractions are positive.

S = + 3/5 + + ¾

Solution:

Step 1. Find the LCD (Least/lowest Common Denominator). In this case, there is no
common factor between the denominators, therefore, to find the LCD, just multiply
them, this LCD equals 20 (5 x 4 = 20).

Step 2. Use the LCD as the new denominator, then change the dissimilar fraction to
similar fractions by dividing the LCD by the original denominator and multiply the
quotient by the original numerator.

S = + 3/5 + + ¾ = + 12/20 + + 15/20

Step 3. Apply the rules of adding integers with the same positive sign is positive. Add
the numerators and copy the common denominator.

S = + 12/20 + + 15/20 = + 12 + + 15 all over 20

S = + 27 / 20

Answer: Jerry bought + 27/20 kilograms of pork for his father.

A. Adding Signed Fractions

Example 1: S = + ¼ + + 3/8

Solution: Step 1. LCD = 8

Step 2. S = + ¼ + + 3/8 = + 2/8 + + 6/8
Step 3. S = + 2 + + 6 all over 8
S=+8/8=+1

Example 2: S = – 3/5 + – 8/15

Solution: Step 1. LCD = 15

Step 2. S = – 3/5 + – 8/15 = – 9/15 + – 8/15
Step 3. S = – 9 + – 8 all over 15
S = – 17 / 15
Example 3. S = + 7/8 + – ¾

Solution: Step 1. LCD = 8

Step 2. S = + 7/8 + – ¾ = + 7/8 + – 6/8
Step 3. S = + 7/ + – 6 all over 8
S=+1/8

Example 4. S = + 2/3 + – 8/9

Solution: Step 1. LCD = 9

Step 2. S = + 2/3 + – 8/9 = + 6/9 + – 8/9
Step 3. S = + 6 + – 8 all over 9
S=–2/9

B. Subtracting Signed Fractions

Example 1. D = + 7/8 – + ¾

Solution: Step 1. LCD = 8

Step 2. D = + 7/8 – + ¾ = + 7/8 + – 6/8
Step 3. D = + 7 + – 6 all over 8
D=+1/8

Example 2. D = – 5/6 – – 2/3

Solution: Step 1. LCD = 6

Step 2. D = – 5/6 – – 2/3 = – 5/6 + + 4/6
Step 3. D = – 5 + + 4 all over 6
D=–1/6

Example 3. D = + 5/6 – – 5/9

Solution: Step 1. LCD = 18

Step 2. D = + 5/6 – – 5/9 = + 15/18 + + 10/18
Step 3. D = + 15 + + 10 all over 18
D = + 25 / 18

Example 4. D = – 9/10 – + ¾

Solution: Step 1. LCD = 20

Step 2. D = – 9/10 – + ¾ = – 18/20 + – 15/20
Step 3. D = – 18 + – 15 all over 20
D = – 33 / 20
C. MULTIPLYING SIGNED FRACTIONS

Example 1. P = + 7/10 x + 5/21

Solution: Step 1. P = + 7 / 10 x + 5 / 21
Step 2. P = + ½ x + 1/3
P=+1/6

Example 2. P = – 18/25 x – 10/27

Solution: Step 1. P = – 18/25 x – 10/27

Step 2. P = – 2/5 x – 2/3
P = + 4 / 15

Example 3. P = + 32/35 x – 15/16

Solution: Step 1. P = + 32/35 x – 15/16

Step 2. P = + 2/7 x – 3/1
P = – 6/7

D. DIVIDING SIGNED FRACTIONS

Example 1. Q = + 16/25 divided by + 32/35

Solution: Step 1. Q = + 16/25 divided by + 32/35

Step 2. Q = + 16/25 x + 35/32
Step 3. Q = + 1/5 x + 7/2
Q = + 7/10

Example 2. Q = – 27/64 divided by – 9/16

Solution: Step 1. Q = – 27/64 divided by – 9/16

Step 2. Q = – 27/64 x – 16/9
Step 3. Q = – ¾ x – 1/1
Q=+¾

Example 3. Q = – 25/49 divided by + 125/343

Solution: Step 1. Q = – 25/49 divided by + 125/343

Step 2. Q = – 25/49 x + 343/125
Step 3. Q = – 2/2 x + 3/3
Q = –1
