Are we spread evenly?

There are around 7.9 billion people live in the word. But this population is distributed
unevenly throughout the world. Approximately, 90% of the world population lives
in about 10 per cent of its land area. Two-thirds of the earth's populations live in
four main regions. They are East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Western
Europe. China and India have the world's largest population. According to the
distribution of the global population 2021, 59% of world’s population lives in Asia.
The smallest country in the world in terms of population is Vatican City, which has
approximately 800 citizens.

Population distribution is about how people are spread across the earth. In UK,
there are 61 million people who have spread unevenly. This uneven population
distribution of a country can be shown in a map using population data. (Trace the
map A in page 50 on an A4 paper and add to your writing book)

Population density is a measurement of the number of people in an area. It is

an average number which is calculated by dividing the number of people by area.
Population density is usually shown as the number of people per square kilometer.

 The population density of Sri Lanka in 2021 is - 341 per Km2

 The population density of Colombo in 2021 is -13,364 per Km2
 The population density of UK is - 281 per Km2
 The population density of London is - 5,630 per Km2

The map below shows that world population distribution is uneven. Some areas have
a high population density while others have a low population density. (Paste the map
to your book)

Densely populated areas – crowded areas which have a high population density
are called densely populated areas. Usually towns and cities are more crowded.
There are a range of human and natural factors that attract population to these
areas.

Ex. Areas rich in resources, flat lands, political stability

In Britain 9/10 people live in a city or a town. More than 8 million people of the total
population of UK live in London.

Sparsely populated areas – places with few people which have a low population
density are called sparsely populated areas. These areas tend to be difficult
places to live.

Ex. Limited job opportunities, mountainous areas, unstable countries
