AUSTRALIA IN 2040
• Driven by strong, yet weakening, rates of net migration and natural increase,
Australia's population will swell by 32.1% in 2019-2040. When its population
reaches 33.6 million in 2040, it will be nearly six times larger than neighbouring
Population New Zealand.
Growth • Australia’s substantial and surging consumer base, combined with a relatively
high-income level, means it should remain an attractive market for consumer
businesses. However, the economy is set to contract in the short-term due to
the knock on effects of the Coronavirus pandemic.
• Rising longevity and a slight dip in birth rates mean that the ageing trend will
quicken, with particularly rapid growth in the 80+ age cohorts. However,
immigration of relatively young people and fairly high birth rates mitigate the
Ageing trend somewhat.
• As more enter retirement the old-age dependency ratio will rise increasing
pressure on state resources, such as pensions, though it will remain lower
than the regional average.
• Live births are set to rise every year up to 2040, supported by a stable fertility
rate and rising numbers of women of child bearing age. Therefore, demand for
Births & child-related segments should escalate, even though the share of children in
Fertility total population will drop slightly.
• Ever later marriage and first childbirth highlight the trend for women to
concentrate on their education and careers first.
• Improving lifestyles and high quality accessible healthcare ensure that life
expectancy will rise further up to 2040, remaining among the highest globally.
However, ageing and modern stressful lifestyles, with less exercise and
Health unhealthier diets, will cause a rise in certain health issues, such as obesity and
diabetes, putting more pressure on public healthcare.
• Increasing health awareness, ageing and rising disposable incomes should
encourage a rise in demand for consumer health-related segments.
• Net migration is set to remain strong up to 2040, accounting for over half of
population growth. Foreign citizens will increase by 43.5% to make up over a
fifth of the population by 2040, meaning that demand for international
Diversity & segments such as world food, travel and entertainment should grow.
Migration • The immigration model has shifted to be more market-based in recent
decades, and this is likely to continue. Chinese and Indian immigrants will be
the fastest growing foreign groups over this timeframe.
• Urban population will continue to surge as the country remains one of the most
urbanised globally, while the rural population will start to fall after peaking in
the early 2030s. Urban consumers will therefore remain extremely important
Urbanisation for consumer businesses in Australia.
• All 10 major cities will grow at a slightly slower pace than the urban population
overall. Sydney and Melbourne will continue to dominate the urban landscape,
with over 43% of urban residents residing in one of the cities in 2040.
