Project details

What was your project during College, and how was your experience doing it?

Project worked on during my College was Hybrid vehicle. In a group of 4 students, and
the total duration was 6 months. The main purpose our project was to reduce the pollution
that is caused by the normal vehicle and also to increase the mileage of the vehicle. In our
project we modified the Honda activa to the hybrid vehicle, by replacing the front wheel
with the hub motor and retaining the back wheel as it is connected to the engine as it is in
which hub motor is connected to the control system and further the control system is
connected to the battery and the throttle, by which the vehicle can run in both petrol and
hub motor. The difficulties that we faced are the placement of the batteries as they where
4 batteries and finally we placed the batteries near the foot space. Interesting facts is that
our project does not required any charging it get charged automatically, and does not
required any external charging.

I learnt how to manage the time, to do the work within the time.

My role in our project is that to test the project, from my testing I came to know that
when the Honda activa travelled 50 km by petrol it can travel more of 20 km by switching
to electric, and further from my test as the batteries occupy the foot space there was some
inconvience to place the leg in front.

Difference between IC engine and SI engine

The Spark Ignition (SI) engine, as its name indicates uses spark to ignite the fuel. Si engine is used
in petrol vehicle. And in Compression Ignition (CI) engine, the air is compressed within the
cylinder and the heat of this compression air is used to ignite the fuel. Ic engine is used in diesel
vehicle boats, aiecrafts etc. due to the durability. SI (spark ignition) engine is used in bike engine. Due
to its low compression ratio than CI (compression ignition ) engine which reduces the vibration in engine.

Difference between ac and dc motor

In AC motors, the armature is stationary while the magnetic field rotates. In DC motors, the
armature rotates while the magnetic field remains stationary. The speed of an AC motor can be
changed by varying the frequency. In the case of DC motors, speed can be controlled by changing
the armature winding's current.

What is hub motor

The wheel hub motor (also called wheel motor, wheel hub drive, hub motor or in-wheel motor) is an electric
motor that is incorporated into the hub of a wheel and drives it directly.

What is armature?

An armature is the component of an electric machine which carries alternating current. The armature

can be on either the rotor (rotating part) or the stator (stationary part), depending on the type of
electric machine.

Type of battery

Lithium ion and lead acid battery

Lithium batteries have a much higher energy density than lead-acid. Charging a lead-acid battery
can take more than 10 hours, whereas lithium ion batteries  can take from 3 hours to as little as a
few minutes to charge, depending on the size of the battery. Lithium ion chemistries can accept a
faster rate of current, charging quicker than batteries made with lead acid.

Mechanical technical questions

What is thermodynamics
That deals with the relations between heat and other forms of energy (such as mechanical,
electrical, or chemical energy), and, by extension, of the relationships between all forms of
energy.
How many laws of thermodynamics are there, and name all of them.
A: There are three laws of thermodynamics.

 The first law is also called the law of conservation of energy which says that energy
cannot be created or destroyed in an isolated system.
 The second law of thermodynamics says that the entropy of an isolated system never
decreases.
 The third law of thermodynamics says that the entropy of a system approaches zero as
the temperature approaches zero
What are the different types of fits?
A: There are mainly three groups in fits:

 First is a clearance fit that allows for loose mating where free movement is necessary.
This is used where the elements are required to be able to slide in swiftly without any
obstruction.
 Second is the Interference fit which is relatively tighter than a clearance fit. It requires
some amount of force to join two components.
 The third one is the transition fit which falls between clearance fit and interference fit.
These are used when accurate alignment is essential, and mating parts need great
precision while joining.

ABOUT CNC PROGRAMMING

Jaffer Sharief, the then Railway Minister, who got this project to Bangalore. It was commissioned in
1984 to manufacture wheels and axles for the Indian Railways. 23,000 axles and to assemble 23,000
wheel sets. It employs over 2000 personnel and has an annual turnover of about 82 crores.

ACE DESIGNER
Ace Designers, India’s largest machine tool manufacturing companies. Ace Designers,
started in 1979, is the largest manufacturer of CNC lathes in India. In addition to
producing a comprehensive range of CNC lathes they have also built capabilities in
the field of application engineering and tooling solutions. Their assembly unit is in
peenya and futher the manufacturing unit is in davaspet in which the part of the CNC
machine that the ACE Designer required is manufacture by casting purpose.

When using a vertical lathe, a vertical lathe machine is a machine tool that rotates a work piece
on a rotating axis and performs various machining operations vertically. Eg: drilling , boring
Conversely, when using a horizontal lathe, the machinist works the metal in a side-to-
side fashion. Eg: turning , facing, knurling .

SOLID EDGE

Solid Edge is a 3D computer-aided design (CAD) program created by Siemens Digital

Industries Software. Running on Microsoft Windows, Solid Edge incorporates solid
modeling, assembly modeling, and 2D orthographic view functionality for mechanical
designers.

CAED

Computer aided drawing is a technique to produce engineering drawings with the
assistance of a computer. COMPUTER AIDED DRAWING (CADD) Designers
generally use drawings to represent the object which they are designing, and to
communicate the design to others.

Computer-aided design (CAD) is the use of computers (or workstations) to aid in the

creation, modification, analysis, or optimization of a design. CAD software is used to increase
the productivity of the designer, improve the quality of design, improve communications
through documentation, and to create a database for manufacturing. Designs made through
CAD software are helpful in protecting products and inventions when used
in patent applications. CAD output is often in the form of electronic files for print,
machining, or other manufacturing operations. The term CADD (for computer aided design
and drafting) is also used.

Difference between CAED and Solid edge

Which is a 2D drafting tool that uses technology built several decades past. Inventor
offers 3D design capability which is not available in basic AutoCAD. Solid Edge:
Solid Edge is a 3D CAD solution and was originally built as a 3D design tool. ... 2D
design is also supported in Solid Edge.

Communication Skill

Communication skills are abilities you use when giving and receiving different kinds of
information. While these skills may be a regular part of your day-to-day work life,
communicating in a clear, effective and efficient way is an extremely special and useful
