1. What are grids?

Grid - is a system of intersecting (crossing) lines that form boxes on a


map or globe. Each line in the grid has a number which helps us to locate a
place easily on a map.

2. Why are symbols marked on maps?

Symbols are marked on maps to show cities, capitals, ports, bridges,


hospitals, airports, rivers and many such things. A Map Legend is a key to
all the symbols used on a map.

3. Why are the water bodies shown in two different shades of light blue and
dark blue?

The different shades of blue are used to show the depth of the
waterbodies, the deeper the ocean the darker the blue, the shallower the
ocean the lighter the blue.

If the country is not divided into States, it would be difficult to


govern because the Central Government would have to take care of each
and every problem in every part of the country. People would feel that
their local problems were not being solved effectively and fast.

Akbar and Bairam Khan fought fiercely against Adil Shah and his
general, Hemu in the Battle of Panipat. Finally Hemu was defeated and
Akbar got his throne of Delhi back.

Akbar divided his empire into 15 subas. Each suba was headed by
an officer called subedar. Subas were further divided into sarkars or
