Time and again, poverty has become a perennial problem to the developing countries in the

world particularly Philippines. Its impact has been felt by millions of people which can be considered the
root cause to many societal issues including but not limited to education and subsistence. Marginalized
families living below the poverty line income suffer the most which in turns affect the education of their
children.

Undeniably, poverty is needless to say, the culprit to downgrading performance of students in


education which can be gleaned to the results of the standardized examination particularly the Trend in
International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMMS) and the Programme for International Student
Assessment (PISA). Students living in poverty are likely deprived of the opportunities to enhance their
performance as they struggle to meet both needs amidst their impoverished condition. Being
underprivileged, they are unable to focus to their study as they assist their families earn for a living.
Hence, education is at times being put aside, thereby redounding to their academic performance as
reflected in their assessment reports.
