In recent years use of smartphones have become quite popular and hence
E-commerce and M-commerce came into practice.
E-commerce is the buying and selling of goods or services via the internet, and the
transfer of money and data to complete the sales. It's also known as Electronic
commerce or Internet commerce. Examples of e-commerce includes Amazon,
Flipkart, Quikr.
M-commerce is the subset of E-commerce, it allows the user to buy, sell goods or
services from almost anywhere, by just using the phone or tablet device. Examples
of M-commerce include Mobile banking, or Amazon mobile app. While using
M-commerce several discounts and offers can be applied. A wide range of payment
modes like UPI, Debit Card, Credit Card, Cash On Delivery makes it easier and more
convenient for the users.
According to App Annie’s State of Mobile 2019 report, the total time spent by a
mobile user on shopping in 2018 was 18 billion hours. As more mobile payment
applications like Paypal, Apple Pay, Amazon Pay are used to accept payments, the
use of mobile payments is set to continue its unstoppable growth of 26.93%
between 2020 – 2025
According to Worldpay’s 2018 Global Payment Report the use of mobile payments is
set to continue its inexorable rise and become the second most common payment
method after debit cards by 2022.
The M-commerce world is growing at such a rate that’s never seen before. Marketers
are now expecting M-commerce to be the main channel for online shopping since as
much as 87% of shoppers engage in online product search before buying.
Mobile is the dominant platform for searches with 48% buyers buying from the
mobile. 58% of google searches are done via mobile devices. 79% of smartphone
users have made a purchase online using their mobile devices in the last 6 months.
Thus, the majority of the customers are from the mobile and hence there is much
scope for M-commerce to bloom.
Site search has been an indispensable part of the booming e-commerce industry for
a long time, but now the trend is also dominating in the mobile commerce industry.
Navigating through thousands of products via the mobile is not an easy task when
you are doing it through a mobile phone. So, the m-commerce solution provider
designs the website that will be suitable for the screen size for the phone , tablet etc.
So, it is easy for users to look for the best shopping experience through mobile
phones. Further, 53% of traffic is from mobile phones. This will help in improving the
traffic, user experience by adopting the intelligent site search for the m-commerce
channels to become the most necessary addition.
Today, M-commerce comes with innovative technologies like Augmented reality (AR)
Artificial intelligence (AI) virtual reality (VR). All these three are completely reshaping
the new shopping experience of the people through mobile phones.
With the help of these higher end technologies, it is possible to bring several new
things to life that was not even possible to imagine. Like any other industry, the
assistance of voice is highly needed in the mobile industry as well. The voice search
is turning out to be an increasingly popular form for individuals to perform searches
when the users are buying something using their smartphones.

M-commerce is the newer concept while E-commerce is an older concept.

M-commerce is the subcategory of E-commerce which does the same things via
mobile phones while E-commerce is the broad term which refers to shopping online
with the help of electronic devices like laptops and computers.
In M-commerce some activities can be performed without the internet also but in
ecommerce use of the internet is mandatory.
M-commerce mobile tracking capabilities are so good as mobile apps track and
identify user’s location with help of GPS technology, WIfi, and so on. In E- commerce
location tracking capabilities are limited due to non portability of devices.
Examples of m-commerce include mobile banking app like paytm, in app purchasing
amazon mobile app.
Examples of E- commerce include Amazon, Flipkart, Quikr, OLX websites.

A lot has been written about the promise and potential of the E-commerce industry
in India. What is also taken for granted is the fact that mobile broadband will be the
primary driver of overall internet penetration in India.
Of the next 300 million internet users to be added, more than 200 million are
expected to be mobile internet users. This phenomenon will be aided by the growing
popularity and affordability of smartphones- the lowest price smartphone is
available today is Rs.3000.
Though mobile internet has picked up pace across countries, mobile commerce has
not yet seen the same level of traction. Having said that, there are markets such as
Japan where 20 %of online commerce is transacted through the mobile phone.
More significantly, China has an M-commerce level of 12%, which has been
attributed to the high percentage of mobile - only internet users there (estimated at
30%).
About 15-20% of overall e-commerce in 2015 happened through the mobile phone is
a distinct possibility . while size of display may be a constraint factor for people
purchasing on the mobile phone, the medium , especially given its ubiquity , comes
with several advantages over traditional e- commerce channels like for example,
● Anytime, anywhere shopping:
Whether it is utilising downtime over a long commute or the ability to add something
to your digital shopping cart as and when you think of it, m-commerce offers
consumers significant convenience over traditional ecommerce

● Location-based services:
Another promise of m-commerce for retailers is the ability to engage with their
clients based on their location. They can broadcast deals (discounts at restaurants,
ongoing sales at retail stores, etc) available in the consumers’ vicinity.

● Enhanced in-store shopping:

Mobile commerce offers retailers the unprecedented ability to engage and interact
with the shopper in the store to influence behaviour, improve the shopping
experience and boost spending.

● Bigger Mobile Screens or SmartPhones as we call them:

Big colorful screens have replaced the black and white screens, they do more than
just calling.. They have high speed processors to speed up multiple apps.. Better
screen resolutions .. All thanks to Apple who brought the revolution how we looked
at our phone.

● Internet Access and speed:

Imagine using your smartphone without an internet. Imagine having a smartphone a

decade back in India with no internet access. Access to high speed internet was a
distant dream which is now easily available to all of us at rock bottom prices. It's
easy to get a 3g or 4g connection with just a phone call. The number of service
providers has increased 10 folds
● Technology

With high speed internet and better phones, it has replaced the laptop or desktop..
Infact India is seen as the biggest market for smartphones and internet technology..
Thanks to local brands like Micromax, Intex, Lava, smartphones come as cheap as
2k. Noone was able to predict this revolution as we call an app revolution. There are
companies which are work on app only format (Myntra, Zopper etc)

● Convenience:

If you are one of those who hate to go to shopping malls after a long week.. or even
you feel lazy to open your laptop, connect it to the internet, open the website and
order something(be it food, apparels, or even groceries these days),just pick up your
smartphone and there you go. You can order at your fingertips.. (Book tickets, order
food, shop apparels or groceries for kitchen)

● Safe:

With payment startups like Paytm, Freecharge, PayU who offer mobile wallets, it has
made life much easier. The payments are safe and secure.Customer services are
helpful if you are first timer, very easy to use

● Overall:

The Internet brought revolution in our lives with Laptop and Desktops.. Smartphones
are replacing them in our day to day activities.
