Procedure
1. Tie a string to a pehdulum bob and mark a length of pendulum 50.0 cm on the
string with a pen.
2. Fix the pendulum of length 50.0 cm to a retort stand using two plywood, as
shown in Diagram 1.1.
3. Place a metre rule , with the scale facing upward, at the edge ofthe table.
Secure the ends of the metre rule with cellophane tape.
4. Adjust the reto此 stand so that the centre of the pendulum bob is directly above
the zero mark of the metre rule.
5. Displace th巳 pendulum bob to an amplitude of 20.0 cm as shown in Diagram
1. 2 .
4年

6. Release the pendulum bob and. start.the stopwatch at the same time.
7. Wh en the pendulum bob oscillates to an amplitude of 18.0 cm as shown in
Diagram 1.3, stop the stopwatch.

8. Record the time taken , t , for the amplitude to decrease from 20.0 cm to 18.0 cm
in a table. The decrease in amplitude , x = 2.0 cm.
9. Repeat the experiment for steps 4 to 8 for the amplitude to decrease 企om 20.0 cm
to 16.0 cm, 14.0 cm. 12.0 cm and 10.0 cm. The coηesponding decrease in
amplitude , x , is equal to 4.0 cm , 6.0 cm. 8.0 cm and 10.0 cm respectively.
10. Tabulate all the results.
(a) For the experiment described, state

(c) on a graph paper, draw a graph of t against x.

(d) State the relationship between t and x based on the graph.

(e) Find the value oft when x is 7.0 cm.

(f) Stat~ one precaution that should be taken when the experiment is carried out.
