Time Context:

In the case “The Verdict of Groupthink” the situation started in 1957 where The
Twelve Angry Man movie released. Henry Fonda was one of the twelve selected members of the
jury in trying the case of a man guilty in committing capital murder. These twelve jurors will be seated
separate from the crowd in a courtroom that is overcrowded. This group of men comes from different
backgrounds and professions who are set to make the best decision of the case. When the trial is going
on, Fonda has his doubts on the outcome and starts to suggest alternative interpretation of the case but
feels dismayed because of the group unfounded decision.

Viewpoint:
The movie Twelve Angry Men revolves around a jury, which must reach a
verdict in a murder trial. In order to deliver a verdict, every member must reach a
consensus about the defendant being guilty or not guilty. This is a typical
example of groupthink: having one common goal, and following what you think
everyone else thinks. You do not want to be the one person to stand out.
However, in the movie, juror number 8 is the only one to believe the defendant is
not guilty. As the storyline unfolds, the groupthink theory, once again, takes over.
As juror 8 defends his verdict of not guilty, people start questioning their own
thoughts, ethics, and prejudices.

I. To understand the implications of the Groupthink in considering the stakes
and make a concerted effort in ensuring the decisions are justified.
II. To recognize that there are different personalities of jurors that lead to an
undecided situation.
 Long Term:
I. To assess the judgment on the basis of the group's complete decision-
making process, which could give rise to morality and an affinity for
uniformity in the group.
II. To allow the various juries to escape common views on fair legal action
and plausible reasons for deliberation.
