Lesson 1.1 Terms in Ichthyology
Lesson Summary:
The term Ichthyology comes from the two ancient Greek words “Ickthus” meaning fish and
“logia or logy” meaning study. Ichthyology encompasses everything about fishes. From its
diversity, distributions, habitat requirements, and life histories. By knowing this essential
information, we would be able to manage our fishery resources and conserve fish species and
their aquatic environment.
Ichthyology particularly studies the bony, cartilaginous, and jawless fishes.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Define Ichthyology, mention its coverage, and state its purpose.
2. Identify the bony fish, cartilaginous and jawless fishes.
Learning Task/Activities:
Instruction: Handwrite legibly your answer in your activity notebook. The color of your
notebook must be blue or light blue.
1. Define Ichthyology (2 pts)
2. List and define the different field of science that incorporates Ichthyology (10 pts)
3. List the different fishes living in freshwater (5); brackish water fishes (5); and marine
fishes (5) with their local name and scientific name. (15 pts)
4. Classify the following fishes as the bony fishes (Class Osteichthyes), cartilaginous (Class
Chondrichthyes), and jawless fishes (Class Agnatha). Give at least 3 fishes for each
classification. Refer to the book or reliable internet sources. If you are going to use the
internet, avoid Wikipedia because its content can be edited. (20 pts)
Example: (Format)
